has good soil and rainfall, but is not yet opened out and grows
bad cotton ; and the conditions of Ahmedabad are variable,
having part of the richest and also part of the least prosperous
land of the presidency.
With these remarks this sketchy review regarding the pos-
sible relation between the density of the leper population and
poverty must be concluded. A table is added wherein the
districts of Bengal are arranged according to their prosperity.
The required information has been gathered from Sir William
Hunter's Statistical Account of Bengal. It must be ac-
knowledged that this table contains at least some evidence in
favour of the views expressed.
