in the 6th Seaforth Highlanders in July of
the same year. After
training at Aberdeen,
Elgin and Ripon,
Kennedy proceeded to
France in January
1 9 1 6, and went through
some of the hardest
fighting of the war.
Except for a short in-
terval when he was
invalided home, he re-
mained on active ser-
vice until he was killed
in action near Arras on
15 May 191 7. Both he and his brother, Captain
John Kennedy, proved themselves gallant sol-
diers, fulfilling the promise of their school and

On 25 January 1915
he enlisted in the 4th
Gordons, was later
attached to the 6th Battalion, and received
his training at Aberdeen and Ripon. He at-
tained commissioned rank on 5 August 1916,
and was posted to the 7 th Gordons, but served
in France with the 6th Battalion. Smith was
awarded the Military Cross in March 19 17.
On 16 May 191 7 he fell in action near Arras,
leading his men in a counter attack which
succeeded in re-establishing the position of the
Battalion. As a student of Law, Smith gave
promise of a brilliant future, his shrewdness,
tenacity and keenness in debate marked him
as one who would go far in his profession ; and
the determination which he displayed in his en-
deavour to join the Army after a serious illness,
characterized the whole of his civil and military
career.

from 1 910 until the outbreak of war.
Burnett was a member of the Inns of Court
O.T.C. and was mobilized, August 19 14. In
December he was gazetted to the 3rd Battalion
East Lancashire Regiment, in April 1915 went
to France, and saw much heavy fighting, being
gassed once and wounded twice. In January
19 1 7 he was promoted Captain, and four months
later was killed while leading a night attack, 31
May 191 7.
