1163 Oivil Decorations for Gallantry. — Details of the Aivards.
1 Lieut. G. Adams was awarded Bronze Medal of Royal Humane Society for having, on 6th December, 1902,
saved the life of Lieut. F. J. Crowley, at Unwana, West Africa, whose canoe had capsized in the Cross River.
2 Major Aitken was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 28th November
1880, assisted to save Lieut. J. H. Campbell, 93rd Highlanders, who had been capsized from a yawl in Gibraltar
Bay. Major Aitken swam a considerable distance and dived and brought him to the surface till assistance
arrived ; the night was pitch dark and the weather squally, accompanied by heavy rain, lightning, and thunder.
3 Lt.Colonel Alderson was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving the life of a
private of the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry in the Nile, near Dongola, on the nth June 1885.
* Captain Ansell was awarded the Bronz3 Medal of the Royal Humane Society for rescuing a private soldier
from 10 feet of water in the River Pongola, Transvaal, on the 26th February, 1901.
4 Captain Badcock was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for assisting to save a trooper
who had fallen from his horse into the River Goomtee atLucknow on the 17th April 1897,
5 t Captains E. F. W. Barker and R. M. D. Fox and Lt.Colonel C. H. Whitaker were each awarded the Bronze
Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 28th April, 1904, rescued Rev. T. J. Garniss in a rough
sea off Candia, Crete.
6 Captain G. B. Bayley, Captain A. B. Forman, Captain C. Gosling, and Captain R. Selous were each
awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for their efforts in saving the persons on board
the Warren Hastings (1,246 in all), which ran ashore on the Island of Reunion while transporting troops
from the Cape of Good Hope to the Mauritius, on the 14th January 1897. All the passengers except two were save^d.
2nd Lieutenant Forman, Captain Gosling, and Second Lieutenant Selous have also beenawarded by the Commit ee
of Lloyd's the Silver Medal of the Society for the same service.
7 Major Beardmore was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving the life
of a native labourer of R. E. D. at Masu during the Ashanti war of 1873 under the following circumstances: —
The man had fallen into the river, which was in flood, and Major Beardmore, in rescuing him, was obliged, on
account of the high banks, to land him on the opposite side of the river. At very great risk, he then had to drag
and force him again into the river, and swim him across, to place him in safety, as the former side was then in
the enemy's hands; otherwise he would have fallen into the Ashantis" hands.
8 Major Bell was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving the life of an ayah who
had fallen into the sea at Apollo Bunder, Bombay, on the 6th September 1895.
9 t Captain Bickford was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving the life of Private
Hamilton, of the Scots Greys, who was swept away by the current whilst crossing the Assegai River, South
Africa, on the 26th February, 1901.
10 Lieutenant Binny was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for an attempt to rescue a
child who had fallen into the harbourat Weymouth on the 13th June 1897. Unfortunately his efforts were unsuc-
cessful, and he had to be assisted out in an exhausted state.
11 Lt.Colonel Bond was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 14th August
1894, during some biidging operations on the Thames at Alariow, saved the life of a sapper who had fallen into
the water and become helplessly entangled in the weeds.
1 2 Lt.Colonel Brooke was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on 16th Feb. 1903,
with the assistance of a Sepoy, saved three of a party of men, who, whilst cleaning out a well at Belanbeli,
Somaliland, were overcome by the foul gas.
13 Captain Brodie was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 2nd November
1882, rescued Lieut. W. S. Kays, of the 60th Rifles, who had lost his horse while endeavouring to cross a lake near
Ferozepore, and had become entangled in the weeds while weighed down with f ^o rounds of cartridge.
14 Major S. D. Browne was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humaie Society for saving a native
woman from drowning at Nynee Tal, India, on the 31st August 1885.
15 Major A.L. H. Buchanan was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a woman
from drowning in the river Liffey at Dublin, on the 17th April 1893.
15 t Captain Burton was awarded the Bronze Medal of the R03 al Humane Societj- for endeavouring to save the
life of Lieutenant Fagin, who was drowned in a tank, at Unkareddypully, India, on the 23rd December, 1900.
16 Lieut. H. E. Burton was awarded the bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for haviug, on the
:9th August, 1904, rescued C. R. Gardner from the sea at Tynemouth.
■" Major R. Caldwell was awarded Bronze Medal of Royal Humane Society for saving life of Private Cooper
of the Black Watch, on the Nile. The man fell from the paddle-box of a steamer, and Major Caldwell jumped
in from the stern, in the dark, when a strong current was running, and held Cooper until assistance arrived.
18 Major General Cameron was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humar e Society for having, on the 5th
May 1871, swum to the middle of the canal at Ottawa, Canada, righted a canoe which had been upset, and assisted
its occupant back into it.
19 Ca,ptain Crawley was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for attempting to save Captain
Carey, of the Inniskilling Fusiliers, who was drowned while bathing at Ramleh, Egypt, on nth August, 1905.
20 Captain Channer was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a gentleman from
drowning off Eastbourne on the 18th August 1894. Lieut. Channer at the time was a Gentleman Cadet at the
Royal Military College, Sandhurst. A Clasp was added to the Bronze Medal of Lieut. Channer, for rescuing the
life of a native boatman, on Lake Naukuttia I al, India, on the 20th May, 1901.
21 Captain Charlton was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a man from drowning
at Kandia on the 29th October 1899.
22 Colonel Chatfleld was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 31st October
1887 jumped into the Irrawaddy to the help of a corporal who had fallen overboard and was afterwards drowned.
Colonel Chatfield's right hand was disabled and bandaged at the time and he incurred great risk from force of current.
23 Captain Clark was awarded Bronze Medal of Royal Humane Society for saving from drowning a native woman
who had fallen into a well 37 feet deep, with nine feet of water, at Secnnderabad, in the Deccan.on 13th April 1891.
24 Colonel Clementi was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for jumping into the water
with all his clothes on and, with the assistance of Captain W. S. A. Lockhart, rescuing two women who had been
upset from a boat on the Morar Lake, Gwalior, on the 26th December 1869.
25 Major Cockerill was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for assisting to save three
ladies from drowning at Pentire, near Newquay, Cornwall, on the 13th August 1878.
2fi Captain the Hon. J. G. R. U. Cslborne was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for sav-
ing a child from drowning at Vancouver, British Columbia, on the nth September 1897.
27 Colonel Coles was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having saved from drowning
a lad who had fallen into the River Lea on the 3rd June 1892.
28 Lt.Colonel Couchman was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a man from
drowning who had fallen into a nool of great depth at MongLem, China, on the nth March 1897.
29 Lieut. Forsyth was awarded the Bronze M dal of the Royal Humane Society for rescuing a private soldier
from 25 feet of water in tbe sea at Feint, County Kerry, on July 6th 1905.
31 Major Cueack was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 22nd May 1881,
jumped overboard and supported till assistance came a man who fell between the troop ship and H.M.S. Dasher in
Guernsey Roads. Has also been awarded the Silver Clasp for attempting to save a private soldier from drowning
in a well near Delhi on the 16th January 1886.
