I* Sir George AVhite served with the 27th Regiment on the North-ATest Frontier during the Indian rnutiny
in 1857-sg (Medal). Served with the 92nd Highlanders in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and was present in the
engagement at Charasiab on the 6th October 1879, and in the various operations around Cabul in December 1879,
including the investment of Sherpore; was also present in the engagement at Charasiab on the 25th April 1880;
accompanied Sir Frederick Roberts in the march to Candahar, and was present at the reconnaissance of 31st
August and at the battle of Candahar (frequently mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CB., Victoria
Cross, Medal with three Clasps, and Bronze Decoration): was awarded the VIZ "for conspicuous bravery during
the engagement at Charasiab on the 6th October 1879, when, finding that the artillery and rifle fire tailed to
dislodge the enemy from a fortified hill which it was necessary to capture. Major White led an attack upon it in
person. Advancing with two companies of his regiment, and climbing from one steep ledge to another, he came
upon a body of the enemy, strongly posted, and outnumbering his force by about 8 to i. His men being much
exhausted, and immediate action being necessary. Major "White took a rifle, and, going on by himself^ shot the
lender of the enemy. This act so intimidated the rest that they fled round the side of the hill, and the position
was won. Again, on the ist September 1880, at the battle of Candahar, Major White, in leading the final charge,
under a heavy fire from the enemy, who held a strong position and were supported by two guns, rode straight up
to within a few yards of them, and, seeing the guns, dashed forward and secured one, immediately after which
the enemy retired." Served with the Nile Expedition in 1884-85, during the latter part of the time as Assistant
Adjutant and Quarter Master General (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served with the Burmese
Expedition in 1885-89 in command of the 2nd Infantry Brigade and commanded at Mandalay during the
insurrection; commanded the Upper Bnrmah Field Force after the capture of Mandalay (received the thanks
of the Government and of the Commander in Chief in India, promoted Major General for distinguished service
in the field, frequently mentioned in despatches, iTCJS., and Medal with Clasp). Commanded the Zhob Field
Force in i8go (received the thanks of the Government and Commander in Chief in India).

iis gjj. Frederick Forestier Walker served as Assistant Military Secretary to Lieut. General Sir Arthur
Cunj'nghame during the Kafir warof 1878 (mentioned in despatches, CB.). Was employed on special service
throughout the Zulu war of 1S79, first as Prmcipal Staff Officer to No i Column, being present at the action of
Inyezane, and during the occupation of Ekowe, and subsequently on the Line of Communications, and in com¬
mand of Fort Pearson and the Lower Tugela District (mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp). Served
with the Bechuanaland Expedition under Sir Charles Warren in 1884-85 as Assistant Adjutant and Quarter
Master General (CJ/O.).
^^' Lieut. General Mansfield Clarke served in the 57th Regiment with the Column under Colonel Warre on the
Tapteeriverinco-operation with the Central India Field Force in 1858. Served also in the New Zealand war of
1861, and was present at the operations before Te Arei. Also during the war in 1863-66, present as Adjutant of the
S7th at the action of Katikara (mentioned in despatches), and as D.A.Q.M.General from June 1863 to March 1866 in
the Province of Taranaki, including the action near Poutoko, capture of the Maori positions at Ahuahu, Kaitake,
Mataitawa, and Te Arei, operations at Warea and Te Puru, and various minor affairs (repeatedly mentioned in
despatches, Medal). Served in the Zulu campaign of 1879; commanded the 57th Regiment in the engagement
at Gingindhlovu (mentioned in despatches) and relief of Ekowe; afterwards commanded the 2nd Brigade ist Divi¬
sion, and subsequently was appointed to the command of "Clarke's Column"—a force of all arms—formed by
Sir Garnet Wolseley for the following objects : the second advance to Ulundi, the capture of King Cety wa3-o, the
subjugation of the Zulu tribes near the Middle Drift of the River Tugela, and the pacffication of Zululand; these
objects were successfully accomplished—thanked in General Orders (mentioned in despatches as having "per¬
formed the duties of his responsible command in the most highly efficient manner," Brevet of Colonel, CB.,
Medal with Clasp). On the conclusion of the war was appointed Commandant General of the Colonial Forces in
South Africa.
12« Major General C. J. East served with the 82nd Regiment in the Crimea from the 2nd September 1855, and was
present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Also in the Indian campaign
m 1857, and was severely wounded at Cawnpore on the 26th November (Medal). When belonging to the 4isti
Regt. served as Assistant Quarter Master General with the Chittagong column of the Lushai Expeditionary Force
in 1871-72 (mentioned in despatches, received the thanks of the Governor-General in Council, Medal with Clasp, and
Brevet of Major). Served in the latter part of the Zulu war of 1879 as Deputy Adjutant and Quarter Master Gene¬
ral, and was present in the engagement at Ulundi (mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Colonel, Medal with Clasp).
Served with the Burmese Expedition in 1886-89 i^ command of the ist Brigade after the oaptuxe of Mandalay (men¬
tioned in despatches, CB., and two Clasps).
'28 Lord William Seymour served as a Midshipman with the Baltic Fleet in 1854 (Medal). Served with the 2nd
Battalion Coldstream Guards in the Egyptian war 1882, and was present in the engagement at Tel-el-Mahuta, and
at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (Medal with Clasp, 3rd Class of the Osmanieh. and Khedive s Star).
"'' Major General J. P. C. Glyn served with the Rifle Brigade in the Crimea from the 17th June 1S55, including
the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Embarked for the Gold Coast with the
2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade, and served throughout the second phase of the Ashanti war in 1874, including the
battle of Amoaful, battle of Ordahsu, and capture of Coomassie (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp).
'3* Sir Francis Grenfell served as Aide de Camp to Sir Arthur Cunynghame in the operation of 1877-8 in
he Transkei; also as Staff Officer to Colonel Glyn, commanding a field force in the Transkie, and was present in the
engagement with the Galekas and Gaikas at Quintana Mountain on the 7th Feb. 1S78 (mentioned in despatches,
Brevet of Major). Served in the Kafir war of 1878 as Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quarter Master General at
Head Quarters. Served in the Zulu war of 1879 ^^ Deputy Assistant Adjutant General at Head Quarters, and
was present in the engagement at Ulundi (mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp). Served
under Sir Evelyn Wood in the Boer war of 1881 as Assistant Quarter Master General. Served in the Egyptian war of

'3" Lord Frankfort de Montmorency served with the 33rd Regiment in the Crimea in 1855, including the
eiege and fall of Sebastopol and attack of the Redan on the 8th Sept. (Medal with Clasp, Sardinian and Turkish
Medals). Commanded a Detachment of the 33rd against the rebels, and after the death of the senior Officer
commanded the Dohud Field Force in suppressing the insurgent Bheels in the Rewa Kanta, Guzerat. Served
with a Wing of the Regiment at the siege and occupation of Dwarka, Okamundel. Served in the Abyssinian
campaign of 1867-68 (Medal). Commanded the Frontier Field Force during the operations in the Soudan in
1886-87 (Khedive's Star). Commanded the British Column of the Frontier Field Force during the operations on
the Nile in 1889 (mentioned in despatches).
