*** I1]16 author, Elijah b. Moses b. Menahem Beshizi, of Adrian-
ople is one of the most celebrated of Qaraite writers. He died
about 1490, and his work was completed by his pupil Caleb
Afeudopoulo. The work deals with halakhic rules, and the first
part is largely concerned with the fixing of the calendar for feast-
days, etc. The explanation of the name Beshizi is uncertain. It
has been explained as Turkish (beshikji) or as a corruption
of Byzantinns: neither being very probable. This is a reprint of
the very rare Constantinople edition of 1530-31, published by his
grandson. On the fly-leaf at the beginning is a ms. extract from
a commentary on Seder hag ham-mazzoth, cap. 2, by
