NEWMILNS & DARVEL,
j^EWMILNS, situated in the parish of Lou-
idoun, is 24 miles S. of Glasgow, 18 N. E. of Ayr,
7 E. by S.. of Kilmarnock, and 16 N. of Old
.Cumnock. It was made a burgh of Barony, by King
James IV, in 1490, and the charter was con-
firmed by Sir Matthew Campbell of Loudoun, in
1566. The bailies are competent to hold courts,
from which -there is no appeal, except to the court
of session ; and in other respects their jurisdiction
is as ample as that of most royal burghs. At tlie
sabbatli evening school about 150 children attend.
This i« a neat town, and the river Irvine runs on
the southern side. Tlie Marquis of Hastings having
married the illustrious Jieiress of Loudoun, is the
superior of the burgh. Nicol Brown, esq. of Water-
haugh, has also considerable property, and is supe-
rior of a village adjoining, called Greenholm. The
maiket is particularly well supplied with butcher*'
meat and vegetables. The muslin weaving is the
chief support of the burgh, iu wliich there are from
6 to 700 nundred hands employed. There are five
annual fairs, viz.: third Tuesday in May, secoiid
Wednesday in July, 22d of August, 18th of October,
and 29th of November; all old style.
Darvel, a small village iu the same parish, con-
tains a school erected by the Marchioness of Hast-
ings about eight or nine years ago, which is perhaps
not equalled by any provincial school in Scotland.
The inhabitants are employed in the weaving of
muslin. - .
