FALA and SOUTRA, anciently dis-
tinct parishes and partly in Haddington-
shire, now form a united parish, which
under the Boundary Order 89 is wholly in
Edinburghshire : the kirktown and the
hamlet of Faladam were formerly in the
first-named county, the united parish in
the poor combination of Dalkeith, and in
the small debt court district of Haddington.
The village of Fala lies on the road from
Edinburgh to Lauder, 11 miles south-west
from Haddington, and 3£ miles north-east
from .Tynehead station on the North British
main line from Carlisle to Edinburgh, and
Soutra old church is 5 miles north-east
from Heriot station on the same line. The
western extremity of the Lammermuir
Hills is in this part of the parish, ter-
minating in Soutra Hill, 1,209 feet above
sea level and the detached peak of Gilston,
1,362 feet. The area is 6,579 acres; rate-
able value, £1,400; the population in 1901
was 319 civil, 279 ecclesiastical.
Blackshiels, a small hamlet, originally a
detached portion of the parish of Humbie,
has been transferred by Boundary Order
edinbueghshiee.

GILMERTOrT ia a quoad sacra parish
and considerable village in the civil parish
of Liberton, with a station on the Roslin
and Glencorse branch of the North British
railway, 3J miles south-east from Edinburgh
and 2£ north from Dalkeith. Here is a Read-
ing Room and Institute. The population of
the ecclesiastical parish in 1901 was 1,482,
and in the village, 1,272.

GLENCORSE (or Glencross) is a small
parish in the small 1 debt court district of
Dalkeith, containing about four square
miiles, and is 6 miles south from Edinburgh,
having in it the terminal station of the Ros-
lin and Glencorse section of the North
British railway. The road to Dumfries,
Blggar, Moffat, Peebles and Penicuik passes
through the parish. The present church
was erected in 1S8G at a cost of £3,000, in
place of the eariier structure, which occu-
pied an eminence ^ a mile north-west. At
Glencorse is the 1st Regimental district and
depot of the Royal Scots. Glencorse House
is the property of John Cockburn esq. and
residence of Mrs. Pitman.
Milton Bridge is a small hamlet in the
parish.
The area comprises 4,246 acres. The
rateable value is £8,935 ; the population in
1891 was 1,451 and 1901, 1,347, including
1G8 in the barracks
Auchendlnny is a. small village in the
parish of Glencorse, 7£ mtles south from
Edinburgh, on the road to Peebles, and is
situated in a romantic dell, through which
flows the North Esk. and has a station on
the Edinburgh and Penicuik section of the
North Bridlsh railway. This place has been
long known for the manufacture of paper,
and there is still a paper mill in operation,
Contiguous to the village. Auchendumy
House is the residence of Mrs. Newnham.
The population in 1901 was 377.
