ming bart. ; Brodie Castle, of Lieut. Ian. A.
M. Brodie D.S.O., D.L., J.P. and Grange
Hall, of Montagu James Grant-Peterkin
esq. D.L., J.P. About 2 miles below the
castle, the river, which debouches into
Findhorn bay, is crossed by an elegant
suspension bridge, which was erected by
a joint stock company, in shares of £10
each. Forres, as before stated, is a royal
burgh, and governed by a provost, three
bailies, a dean of guild, treasurer and 11
councillors, and unites with Nairn, Fort-
rose and Inverness in returning a mem-
ber to Parliament, the present representa-
tive of the Inverness burghs being Sir
Robert B. Finlay K.C. A sheriff small debt
court sits once in every two months for the
recovery of debts not exceeding £12. The
trade of Forres is not of an extensive
character. Dye works, manufactories for
woollens, artificial manures, boots and shoes
and bobbins, chemical works and flour mills
being the principal branches. Three-
quarters of a mile from the centre of the
town is situated the Leanchoil Hospital,
erected fin 1891, at a cost of between £6,000
and £7,000, for the burgh of Forres and the
six adjoining parishes. The North of Scot-
land Bank Lim. The British Linen Co. the
Royal Bank of Scotland, the Caledonian
Banking Co. limited and the National Bank
of Scotland Limited have branches here.
In the centre of the High street stands the
Town House, a substantial structure, with
a tower in the Scottish Baronial style sur-
mounted by a spire; the building comprises
the gaol, a court house, a council room &c. ;
and near to this stands a handsome Gothic
market cross of four storeys, the lower one
having eight pointed arches with angle
buttresses surmounted by finials. A news-
paper, the " Forres, Elgin and Nairn
Gazette," is published every Wednesday.
Owing to the configuration of the country
round about Forres, the burgh enjoys a re-
markable immunity from rain, the rainfall
for the past few years having been ascer-
tained from accurate observations to be
about the lowest in Scotland, and this
circumstance, and the soil being porous,
mark out Forres as an excellent health
resort. Cluny Hill House, on one of the
eminences in the vicllnity of the town, was
built for a hydropathic establishment.
There are two masonic lodges in the town.
There is an Established church, two
United Free churches, and others for Epis-
copalians, the Evangelical Union and Bap-
tists. Anderson's Institution, founded by
Jonathan Anderson esq. a native of Forres,
for educating children of the humble class
from the parishes of Forres, Rafford and
Kinloss, was built in 1824, and adjoins the
institute; this school is now placed under
the Forres School Board. The Forres
Public school stands opposite. The Me-
chanics' Institute, also in High street, a
fine building, the property of the burgh,
possesses a library, a reading room and two
public halls: the large hall is of recent
erection, and is capable of seating 1,000
persons. A corn market is held every
Tuesday, and a cattle market every alter-
nate Tuesday ; cattle sales are also held in
the auction mart every Tuesday. Feeing
markets for hiring servants are held on
the Saturday before the 28th of May ("called
Whitsunday market) and the Saturday
before the 28th of November (called Mar-
tinmas market). The area of the parish
comprises 5,440 acres; rateable value, of
landward. £8,096: burghal, £19,388; the
population in 1901 was 5.241, of which
4,313 are in the burgh. The number of
electors on the pnrliamentarv register in
1903 was' 596. The E;irl of Moray, Sir
William G. Gordon-dimming hurt, the
trustees of the late James Grant Peterkiu
esq. of Grange fd. 1900), George Grant esq.
of Invereme, Mrs. Roney Druyatt, of
Ratho, and the representatives of Mrs.
Fraser Tytler, of Sanquhar, of C. Mac-
pherson Grant esq. of Donneduan, and of
R. D. Grant esq. of Thornhill. are the
principal landowners of the parish.
