ISLE OF MAY. This small island, 1
mile by three-quarters in extent, contains a
lighthouse, visible at 21 miles ; the island,
though included in the county of Fife, is
not connected with any parish, and lies
at the mouth of the Firth of Forth, 6
miles south-east of Cellardyke and the
same distance south-east-by-south from
Crail. There are some remains of a monas-
tery. The population in 1891 was 27, and
in 1901, 16.

FIFESHIEE.
MONIMAIL is a parish, in the northern
part of the county, and in the small debt
court district of Cupar, its kirktown being
5 miles west of Cupar. It iB bounded on
the north by Dunbog, Creich, and Moonzie,
on the south by Cults and Collessie, on the
east by Cupar, and on the west by Abdie ;
it is 5 miles from north to south by a
breadth of 4. Collessie, 1 mile distant, on
the Perth and Ladybank section of the
North British railway,is the nearest station.
The northern parts consist of a fine range
of hills, the highest of which is called
Mount Hill. The monument to the late
Earl of Hopetoun, erected on its summit,
is a plain Doric column, 92 feet in height,
and within is a narrow spiral staircase
giving access to the top, whence a fine
view of the valley of the Eden and the
Firths of Forth and Tay is obtained. The
greater portion of the parish is in a high
state of cultivation, the remainder being
pasture and woodland. The parish church
at Monimail is a handsome building, and
contains nearly 600 sittings. There is also
a United Free church at the Bow of Fife.
Fernie Castle, a place of great antiquity,
and once of considerable strength, is now
the residence of Major Francis W. Bal-
four D.L., J.P. Melville House is the
residence of Miss Leslie-Melville. The
Earl of Leven and Melville P.O. Major F.
\V. Balfour, of Fernie, R. W. Rankine esq.
of Cunnoquhie, and Henry W. Hope esq.
of Rankeillour Hope, are the principal
landowners. The area comprises 6,548
acres; rateable va'.ue, £8,418; the popu-
lation in 1891 was 769, and in 1901, 720.
Bow of Fife is a hamlet in the parish, 1£
miles south-east from the kirktown. Spring-
field is the nearest railway station, 2 miles
distant.
Easter Fernie is> a hamlet in the parish.
Cupar is the- nearest railway station, 3£
miles distant.
Letham is a village in the parish. The
nearest railway station is at Collessie, 1£
miles distant.

NEWBTJRGH is a royal burgh and'
a parish on the south shore of the Firth of
Tay, 33 miles north from Edinburgh, 11
south-east from Perth, 10 north-west from
Cupar, and a station on the Ladybank, New-
burgh and Perth section of the North
British railway. The town consists of one-
long street in the direction of east and west,
parallel with the course of the river, and a
lane or two leading towards the shore,
where there are quays for shipping, and a
spacious harbour. The Tay up to this points
is navigable for vessels of about 400 tons,.
