NEW KILPATRICK, a parish, for-
merly partly included in this county, was,
in 1801, wholly transferred to the'county
of Dumbarton, which see.
KILSYTH is a town, police burgh and
parish, in the small debt court district
of Lennoxtown. The parish is about 7
miles in length, and i\ in breadth. In
form it is an irregular oblong, bounded
by the river Carron on the north, which
separates it from St. Ninians, Fintry on
the north-west, Cumbernauld and Kirkin-
tilloch, in Dumbartonshire, on the south,
Denny on the east, and Campsie on the
west. It is watered by the Carron and
Kelvin rivers. The Garrel Burn, a tribu-
tary of the Kelvin, intersects the parish
and burgh. The Barton Loch and Birken-
head reservoirs of the Forth and Clyde
canal are in the parish. Railway com-
munication with Glasgow was opened here
in 1878, through the Blane Valley section
»f the North British line, and there is a
line from Larbert on the Caledonian rail-
way. The town is on the main road from
Stirling to Glasgow, 35 miles west from
Edinburgh, 15 south-south-west from Stirl-
ing, between 12 and 13 north-north-east
from Glasgow, and nearly 12 west-by-south
from Falkirk, and is governed by a pro-
vost, two bailies and six town councillors.
A police and justice of the peace court is
held every Monday. About the middle of
the parish is a hill, 1,393 feet high, which
exhibits a fine specimen of basaltic
columns. The parish is stocked with coal
and ironstone and the working of these
and whinstone quarrying form the main
industries. Hand weaving, formerly the
staple industry, is almost extinct, but
power loom weaving is now carried on.
The parish also contains 2 small villages,
Banton to the east of the burgh and Chapel-
green to the -west. The manufacture of
coke is carried on by Messrs. William
Baird and Co. Lim, and the United Col-
lieries Lim. There is Whinstone and free-
stone quarrying at Barrwood, Auchen-
starry, Colzium, Neilston, Beltmoss, and
the Glen quarries. Branches of the Royal
Bank of Scotland and the National Bank
of Scotland Limited, are established in the
town, and there is also a local savings
bank. Kilsyth formerly gave the title of
viscount to the unfortunate family of
Livingstone, attainted in 1715 for their
attachment to the house of Stuart ; in the
burial place of this family, the bodies of
Jean, Lady Kilsyth and her infant son lay
embalmed for many years ; the last vis-
count died an exile at Rome, 12 Jan. 1733.
In 1637, near the village, the Covenanters,
commanded by General Baillie, were de-
feated by Montrose. Colzium House, at
present occupied by Hugh Moncrieff esq.
is the property of Sir Archibald Edmond-
stone bart. of Duntreath Castle, Strath-
blane, and is the principal landowner.
The Duke of Montrose K.T. Robert Glen,
Thomas B. Provan, Henry M. Caddell, of
Grange, Bo'ness, James and Thomas
Lennie, Messrs. William Baird and Co.
Hamilton Brown esq. J.P. and Alexander
Provan esq. are also landowners. Acre-
age of the civil parish, 13,123; burgh,
280 acres : valuation of the parish, land-
ward, £30,895; burghal, £1S,648; popula-
tion in 1891, 7,424. and in 1901, 9.840, the

town numbering 7,292; ecclesiastical
parish, population in 1901, 8,526. The
population of the municipal wards in 1901
was, North, 2,292; East, 2,098: West,
2,902.
Banton and Mallins form a village in
Kilsyth civil parish. Population in 1901,
427.
Chapelgreen, 1£ miles west, and Banton,
about 2 east, are hamlets in this parish.
The former has a station called Gavell, on
the Glasgow and Kilsyth section of the
North British railway. For the latter the
nearest station is Colzium, on the Larbert
and Kilsyth line of the Kilsyth and Bonny-
bridge railway.
