(593) Thomas Hamilton of Orchardfield and Priestfield, killed at Pinkie
Cleuch 10th September 1547. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert
Leslie of Innerpeffer, and had : —
(a) Thomas (No. 594).
(b) John Hamilton, died in Tower of London 1610.
(594) Thomas Hamilton of Priestfield. Served heir to his father 15th April
1549. Appointed a Lord of Session as Lord Priestfield May 1607. He
married, first, Elizabeth, daughter of James Heriot of Trabroun, and
had:—
(a) Thomas (No. 595).
He married, second, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Andrew Murray of
Blackbarony, and had : —
(b) Andrew (No. 620).
(c) Sir John Hamilton of Magdalens, Linlithgow. Appointed
a Lord of Session 27th July 1622, and Lord Clerk
Register same year. Died at Holyrood House 28th
November 1632 ; buried in Abbey there.
(d) Patrick (No. 625).
(e) General Alexander Hamilton, died 1649. He married, first,
Dalzell ; second, Cochrane ; third, a daughter
of Sir David Crichton of Lugton. He had a son : —
(1) Alexander Hamilton, died 1655.
HrttlS on Seal, 1607. — On a chevron between three cinquefoils a round buckle
(Macdonald). Arms. — Gules, on a chevron between three cinquefoils argent
five buckles azure (Stodart). [Plate VII., fig. 13.] In Font's MS., 1624. —
Gules, a chevron argent charged with five buckles azure between three cinque-
foils of the second. MOTTO : "Immobile."
(595) Thomas Hamilton of Priestfield, affectionately known as "Tarn o' the
Cowgate," was born 1563, and died 29th May 1637. In 1592 he was
made a Lord of Session as Lord Drumcairn. In November 1613 he was
created Lord Binning, and on 20th March 1619 Earl of Melrose,
but the last title was changed to EARL OF HADDINGTON 27th August
1627, with the original precedence. He married, first, 1588, Margaret,
daughter of James Borthwick of Newbyres. She died December 1596.
He married, second, Margaret, daughter of James Foulis of Colinton.
She died 31st May 1609. He married, third, Julian, daughter of Sir
Thomas Ker of Ferniehirst. She died March 1637. By his first wife he
had two daughters. By his second, three sons : —
(a) Thomas (No. 596).
(b) Sir James Hamilton of Priestfield, born 29th May 1603. He
was served heir to his nephew, Thomas Hamilton, son
of his younger brother, Sir John Hamilton of Trabroun,
15th October 1647. He married, about 1623, Anne,
daughter of Sir Patrick Hepburn of Waughton, and
had :—
(1) Thomas Hamilton, born 27th March 1627; died
August 1636.
