10. Of the total population only about 21 per cent ., according to the
Census of 1906, are born within the City. Since 1872 there has been a progressive fall in the proportion of Bombay born citizens and a corresponding rise in
the proportion of those belonging to districts in the Presidency.

As has already been mentioned, besides those who come from other places
and settle down permanently or for a few years in Bombay, a very large
proportion of the total population is composed of people who come to the City
in search of employment at certain times of the year, and leave again after a
few months to return to their own homes. The floating population of this kind
is probably not less than 150,000 to 200,000 persons. The influx of these people
commences in November and continues throughout the dry weather. The exodus
occurs in May and June. As the Census figures are recorded in February or
March, they include nearly the whole of this temporary floating population.
