37. But the results obtained by attempting to calculate death-rates upon the
census figures in Bombay are practically worthless for the following reasons:
(1) It is an exceedingly difficult thing to obtain an accurate census
in Bombay.
(2) The census is usually conducted in the middle of the dry weather
when the yearly influx of people is at its height; and the number present
then is far in excess of those to be found a few months later. The mean of
the population present in the City during the dry and the wet seasons is
probably not less than 100,000 below the census population.
