Protheracic lobes.-With a tuft of scales.
Upright forked cephalic scales.-Of the usual broadly expending type.
Wing scales.-Not characteristic.
NYSSO-MYZOMYIA ROSSI.
Adult characters.-A fair sized mosquito, of a general light brown colour.
The head is blackish, but possesses a well-developed frontal tuft of white hairs
projecting forwards. The palpi have three white bands, and in the female, the
outermost which includes the tips of the palpi is broad, the other two being
narrow. The proboscis is dark brown with a yellowish tip. The wings are
spotted with black especially along the border of the costa and the central spot
resembles in shape an expanded "T". The legs are brownish in colour,
but show white bandings at the joints, especially noticeable on the forelegs.
There is no speckling of the legs.
Examination with a microscope shows many golden hairs and scattered
narrow whitish scales on the thorax, dense yellowish brown hairs on the general
surface of the abdomen and a few true scales on the last one or two segments;
these scales are especially noticeable around the base of the claspers in the male.
Larval characters.-The frontal hairs on the clypeus of the larv are
simple and unbranched. Palmate hairs are present from the second to the
seventh abdominal segment. The terminal filament of each leaflet of the
palmate hairs is very long, often longer than the basal portion. There is little
or no marking or pigmentation on the shoulder of the leaflets at the origin of
the terminal filaments.
Ovum.-Boat-shaped, with a broad upper surface. There is a well-
developed fringe striated throughout its whole length, and scallop-shell shaped
floats which touch the margin of the anterior surface. The lower surface
is not ornamented.
145. NEOCELLIA.
Generic characters.
Abdomen.--The dorsal surface of every segment carries scales. The ventral
surface of the last three or four segments carry scales. None of the scales are
aggregated to form tufts.
Thorax.-With a short, broad true scales.
Protheracic lobes.-With a tuft of scales.
Upright forked cephalic scales.-Of the usual broadly expending type.
Wing scales.-Not characteristic.
NEOCELLIA STEPHENSI.
Adult characters.-A medium sized mosquito closely resembling Nysso-
myzomyia rossi in general appearance. Head blackish, with a prominent
frontal tuft of white hairs projecting forwards. The palpi have three white
bands which in the male are almost indistinguishable from those of Nysso-
myzimyia rossi. In the female the medium white band is broad and only
separated from the broad terminal white band by a narrow band of
black; the proximal white band is narrow; and there are also a few
scattered white scales among the black scales of the palpi, which give it a
somewhat speckled appearance. The proboscis is blackish brown in colour
with a whitish tip. The wings are spotted with black especially along the costa
and there is a central "T"-shaped spot with a small black spot like a full-stop
adjoining it. The legs are thickly speckled with white scales and there are
narrow white bands at certain of the joints.
Examination under a microscope shows the thorax to be thickly covered
with broad white scales and dark hairs; the ventral surface of the last two or
three segments are also covered with scales, but there are no scale tufts.
