eith is berite or truth. Thow ſuld be ſikkar that
the cauſe or matter quhilk thow confermis with
ane eith is trew. The ſecund conditioun is rychte-
ouſnes. Thow ſuld be ſykkar yat the thing quhilk
thow ſais is iuſt, or yat, quhilk yow proiniuis to do
with ane eith, may be iuſtly and lauchfully done.
The thrid conditioun is iugement (that is to ſay)
diſcretioun for thow ſuld nocht ſweir at all tymes
nor for all matteris, ſuppoſe thai be trew and iuſt,
bot allanerlie quhen greit neid requiris and thane
with greit deliberatioun, diſretion, and auiſement.
Gyf thow wantis ony of thir thre conditionis, thi
eith is unlauchful, &(as ſanct Neirome ſais) plaine
periurie or meinſweiring. When thow ſweris with
out verite, thow makis an fals with. Agane, quhe
thow ſweiris wout rychteouſnes, thow makis ane
dniuſt and wickit eith. When thow ſweiris baſtelte
without the iugement of diſcretioun, thou makis
ane vaine and fulehardie eith. And ſa boand thre
maner of wayis yow brekis this command takand
the name of God in vaine. And this doctrine is co-
ſorine to the expoſitioun of this command, quhilk
our ſalviour giffis in ye evangil, ſayand thus: Au-
diſtis quia dictu eſt antiquis, no periurbis, reddes
autem dno iuramenta tua. Ego autem dico vobis,
no iurate omnino, nec per cœlum, quia thronus dei
eſt, neq; per terram, quia ſcabellum eſt peinm eius.
neq; per hieroſolimā, quia ciuitas eſt magni regis,
neq; per caput tuum iuraueris, qua non potes vnū
capillum album facere aut nigeum. Sit autē fermo
