A NEW SONG IN PRAISE OF

TEMPERANCE AND FATHER HUDSON

[NLS note: a graphic appears here - see image of page]

COME all you good people I call your
attention,
The truth unto you I declare I'll lay
down,                      (the Hudson,
Concerning this clergyman, I mean Fa-
That's converting these people in coun-
try and town.
It's a gift from our Saviour, that he has
received,                      (going astray;
To convert all these people that were
And those who uphold him, I hope their
poor souls,                      (ment day.
Will be sheltered on the great Judg-

To praise Father Hudson, it is my inten-
tion,
If I am able all his virtues to indite;
To relieve the poor widow, and also the
orphan,
It is his whole study he does it with
delight;                      (pointed,
He is a true pillar our Saviour has ap-
And; those who take his counsel every
evil will shun;                      [him.
May the all seeing eye in Heaven reward
For all the pious things this good man
has done.

See now my people how we were treat
ed awhile back,
For drinking our own we were haul'd
off like rogues,
The publicans' wives and their daugh-
ters all laughing,
For to see us in the street with our
old torn clothes
A hat nor a shoe we had not for a, Sun-
day
To go to our chapel as we ought to do,
While these roguish publicans they had
all our earnings.
And when we were drunk they would
show us the door.

So now my good people, I give you all
a strict warning,
To shun all these houses you used to
resort,
You will have good clothes, your vic-
tuals and wages,
And indeed to your credit of it you
can boast;
The publican's pot it won't boil with
your earnings,
Nor dram shops be crouded from
morning till night,
And as for the Bridewells they will be
knock'd idle,
Since our brave Irish heroes are
doing what is right.

So to conclude and finish my verses,
I will say no more, but I will lay
down my pen.
We will pray to our Saviour both late
and early,
For brave Father Hudson who has
stood our friend.
Our amusement was swearing, cursing,
and blaspheming,
Drinking and fighting, it was our de-
light;
But the case is now altered, by the Al-
mighty's orders,
We will drop all such works, and liye
sober and quiet:
