The CHARACTER of a Turn-Coat,

                               OR THE

True PICTURE of a BRITISH Monſter.

SOme angry Muſe direct my Pen
To write againſt thoſe cunning, ſubtle Men,
Who, to augment the greatneſs of their Crimes,
Can turn their Hearts and Hands in any Times:
If Kings are Gods, as Scripture fay they be,
Durſt Men diſſemble with their Majeſty ?
Yes, that they dare, and ſwear they really love
The Man to whom they would obnoxious prove.
They'd Cog, and Lye and Flatter as they pleaſe
Without regard to tender Conſciences ;
Addreſs their Sovereigns, when 'tis their Intent
To drive them to perpetual Baniſhrnent :
Or, what is worſe; inexorable Fare !
Behead their Monarch at his Palace Gate,
The Martyi's Son to Crowns and Sceptres born
Alive tne people lov'd ; but dead their Scorn
Aſpers'd his Ro al Aſhes with diſgrace,
And ſtrove who moſt ſhou'd ſhew a Janus Face.
poor James the Second, tho' it was his Fate
To truſt his Sceptre, till it was too late,
To Jeſuits, and all that bloody Crew,
Who think it is not ſinful to embrew

Their Daggers in the reaking Gore of thoſe
Who their erroneous Tenets durſt oppoſe,
Yet more reſpect dull Scriblers ought to ay
To any that once bore Imperial Sway :
So when bleſt Mary and great William came
By wife Convention to enjoy the fame;
For our Deliverance from Popery,
They'd daily let harſh Satyrs at 'em fly :
And thoſe who've praiſed ANNE, 'tisnow their
To blah Her Trophies, Piety and Fame. [Aim
Nay, let who's will to Royalty ſucceed,
From two-fac'd Monſters we ſhall ne'er be freed;
Witneſs the Bull and Ox, who ſtrangely play'd
Their Cards of late, and were not then afraid
To let the World behold their K ry,
When they had once arriv'd to Dignity
Above their Merits, but their Pride at laſt;
Is to a lower Ebb of Fortune caſt.
They were ſuch flattering Sycophants of Stare
They'll bow and cringe to that fame Thing they hate
For as the Times do change they'll change their Face
Foſ wear their Sex, their Age ,their Name and Rate
