No. 232.
PROCEEDINGS OF THE HON'BLE THE LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR OF THE PUNJAB,
IN THE EDUCATIONAL DEPARTMENT,
Dated 21st May, 1868.
READ—
Annual Report of the Lahore Medical School for 1867-68, furnished by Dr. Scriven, Principal.
The Hon'ble the Lieutenant-Governor observes that during the year
under report 4 students were passed as Sub-Assistant Surgeons, of whom
one is now House-Surgeon of the Hospital, and the remaining three in charge
of Dispensaries; that 20 students were passed as Native Doctors; that
during the eight years of its existence the institution has furnished 10 Sub-
Assistant Surgeons, and 71 Native Doctors—an important addition to the
Medical service; that, at the present time, there are 21 students of the English
class, training for Sub-Assistant Surgeons, 57 students in the Hindustani
class, training for Native Doctors, while there are 18 students, supported from
local sources, in training for employment in connection with District Dispen-
saries, &c.
2. There can be no doubt of the great value of the Lahore Medical
School. Owing to the extension of Dispensaries (a measure important on
grounds of public policy as well as of humanity) and to the greater atten-
tion now paid to sanitary matters, there is an increasing demand, in this
Province, both for Sub-Assistant Surgeons and Native Doctors, and this
demand could not have been met, but for the existence of the Lahore Medical
School.
3. Its utility was, further, signally exemplified last year, when it was
able to furnish 20 Native Doctors, whose services were of the greatest value
in connection with the outbreak of epidemic cholera.
4. This institution has met with some opposition heretofore, and its
necessity has even been questioned; but His Honor has no hesitation in
stating that, he considers the Lahore Medical School to be one of the most
useful and most successful institutions in the Province; and he believes that
any impressions that may have been formed to the contrary, have been the
result of misapprehension.
ORDERED, that the Report be printed and circulated.
By order of the Hon'ble the Lieutenant-Governor of the Punjab.
T.H.THORNTON,
Secretary to Government, Punjab.
