A separate report has been drawn up for the first quarter of 1921, under
G.O. No. 43-P.H., Press, dated 6th January 1922, which enjoined that future
reports should deal with both the vaccine and the bacteriological sections of the
Institute and should cover the official year and not the calendar year as heretofore.

M.R.Ry. Rao Bahadur M. Kesava Pai Avargal, M.D., was in charge of the
Institute from 1st January to 13th February 1921, when Major J. Cunningham,
M.D., I.M.S., the permanent Director, took over charge on, his return from leave.

The report comprises two parts, part I dealing with bacteriological diagnosis
and treatment and part II with subjects connected with public health.

PART I.

(1) The preparation and supply of bacterial vaccines.

The number of doses of autogenous and other bacterial vaccines issued
during the quarter under report is shown in table I. The issues for the past
four years are also included for comparison.

TABLE I.

Statement showing the number of doses of bacterial vaccines prepared and issued during the
last five years.

Number of doses sent out. 1917. 1918. 1919. 1920. 1921, first quarter.
Autogenous vaccines 979 1,718 1,095 2,309 637
Other vaccines 34,473 56,398 97,172 66,739 3,981
Total 35,452 58,116 98,267 69,048 4,618

The number of doses of "other vaccines" issued during the quarter is
much lower than the quarterly average of previous years. This is due to the
fact that the demand for cholera and influenza vaccines, which form the bulk of
the issues, is seasonal and depends upon outbreaks of the diseases which occur
at other periods of the year. Details as to the different types of bacterial vaccines
issued during the quarter are given in table II. This table calls for no comment.
