REPORT ON THE WORKING OF THE KING INSTITUTE, GUINDY

   The exhibit of 12 photographs illustrating the various activities of the King
Institute which was forwarded last year to the Pasteur Centenary Exhibition at
Strasburg was awarded a diploma de Grand Prix by the Exhibition authorities.
The Exhibit was sent from Strasburg to the British Empire Exhibition where it
is now on view in the Tropical diseases section.

VII.—RESEARCH WORK.

   Much of the work already referred to in the body of the report may be
properly described as research work.

   1. The experiments in connexion with the vaccine lymph problem will be
found in the section dealing with this subject. Further experimental work on
this subject is in progress.

   2. The work of the various investigation units will be found in the
appendices.

   3. Research work into various aspects of relapsing fever has been carried on
in the Institute during the year and has yielded very interesting and important
results which will be published in due course.

   4. The investigations into water bacteria have also been continued and are
still in progress.

   5. The King Institute was represented at the eleventh meeting of the Indian
Science Congress which was held at Bangalore. The following papers were
presented by members of the staff, at the section for Medical Research:—

      (1) Further observations on latent dysentery, by Major J. Cunningham,
Dr. J. H. Theodore and K. V. Krishnan.

      (2) Recent methods of differentiating lactose fermenting organisms as
applied to Indian conditions, by Major J. Cunningham and Mr. T. N. S. Raghava
Chari, B.A.

   Both of these papers have since been published in the Indian Journal of
Medical Research July number.

   The following papers have also been published in the Indian Journal of
Medical Research and the Indian Medical Gazette during the year:—

      (1) An investigation into the relative merits of lanoline and glycerine lymph
as vehicles for vaccine lymph in the tropics by Major J. Cunningham and Major
J. A. Cruickshank.

      (2) A comparison between the numerical content of certain bacterial
suspensions obtained by the Haemocytometer method and Brown's opacity tubes
by Major Cunningham and Sub-Assistant Surgeon B. Timothy.

      (3) Note on the appearance of a violet producing organism in certain water
supplies of the Madras Presidency by Major J. Cunningham and Mr.T.N.S.
Raghava Chari, B.A.

   (1), (2), and (3) appear in Vol. XI, No. 4, dated April 1924.

      (4) A note on the effect of intravenous injections of Antimony tartarate upon
the development of vaccine, virus by Major J. Cunningham and Major J. A.
Cruickshank. Published in. Vol. LVIII, No. 9 of September 1923.

   In addition the following papers have been forwarded and accepted for
publication in the Indian Medical Gazette and Indian journal of Medical Research:—

      (1) A short note on the cause of Pemphigus Contagiosus (Manson), by Major
J. Cunningham and Dr. S. Ramakrishnan.

      (2) Note on the Types of pneumococci found in cases of Pneumonia in
Madras, Southern India, by Major J. Cunningham, Major J. A. Cruickshank and
Dr. S. Ramakrishnan.

      (3) The classification of the streptococci found in tropical affections, by Major
J. Cunningham and Dr. S. Ramakrishnan.
