REPORT ON THE WORKING OF THE KING INSTITUTE OF
PREVENTIVE MEDICINE, GUINDY, FOR THE YEAR 1924-25.

INTRODUCTION.

   The King Institute functions as:—

      (1) The vaccine lymph depôt for the Madras Presidency.

      (2) The laboratory for manufacture of bacterial vaccines.

      (3) The laboratory where clinical bacteriological work is performed
         for the Presidency in general and for the hospitals in Madras
         city.

      (4) The public health laboratory for the Presidency.

      (5) A research laboratory for the investigation of problems
         connected with medicine and public health.

      (6) Public Analyst's laboratory for the examination of food-stuffs
         in connexion with the Madras Prevention of Adulteration
         Act, 1918.

      (7) An institute for the investigation of epidemic diseases in the
         field by means of mobile bacteriological units.

   The report for the year under review has been divided into the
following sections as has been done during the previous years:—

      (I) Staff and buildings.

      (II) General.

      (III) Financial.

      (IV) Scientific.

      (V) Assistance to other departments.

      (VI) Educational.

      (VII) Research work.

I. STAFF AND BUILDINGS.

   Lt.-Col. J. Cunningham, B.A., M.D., I.M.S., was in charge of the Institute
from the commencement of the year under report until 27th October 1924
when he proceeded to England on combined leave for one year. Dr. D. A.
Turkhud, M.B., C.M. (Edin.), has been in charge as acting Director from
28th October 1924 He was attached as Supernumerary officer from 4th
April to 12th June 1924 and afterwards acted as Assistant Director
from 13th June until 27th October 1924.

   The post of Assistant Director was held by Dr. K. S. Mhaskar from the
beginning of the year until 13th June 1924 when he was transferred
to Bombay Bacteriological Laboratory and from that date by Dr. Turkhud.
Dr. C. G. Pandit, Ph.D. (Lond.), M.B., B.S.(Bom.), D.P.H. & D.T.M.
(England), who joined the Institute as Supernumerary officer on 15th July
1924, has been appointed acting Assistant Director with effect from 28th
October 1924.

   Mr. H. Hawley, M.SC., F.I.C., held the post of Public Analyst, and
was responsible for the Public Health section of the work of the Institute
throughout the year.

   Civil Surgeon T. Sitapati Ayyar, on his return from long leave in
England, was recalled to duty in place of Civil Surgeon Rao Bahadur
M. Kesava Pai, posted as Director, Tuberculosis Institute, Egmore.

   Civil Assistant Surgeon P. S. Ramakrishnan proceeded to England on
combined leave for one year and three months from 4th July 1924 to
undergo a course of training in advanced Bacteriology and Serology.
