REPORT ON THE WORKING OF THE KING INSTITUTE, GUINDY

Districts. Cessation period.
Southern Districts—Tinnevelly, Rāmnād, Madura,
   Trichinopoly and Tanjore.
1st May to 31st August.
Vaccination need not be suspended in Kodaikānal
   taluk including the Municipality.

South-Western Districts—South Kanara, Malabar,
   Coimbatore and Salem (plains).
1st April to 31st July.
No cessation in Shevaroy hills.
The Nilgiris—No off-season.

This programme is in modification of that laid down for the previous
year, but the general cessation for four months still continues.

The total quantity of lymph issued from the vaccine section of the
Institute during the year under review was 2,224,080 cases (vide state-
ment 1) as compared with 2,184,590 cases during the previous year,
showing an increase of 39,490 cases. This is the largest issue on record
since the Institute was founded. The number of operations performed
has considerably increased in spite of the cessation of routine vaccination
work in every district for four months. The supplies to municipalities
and private bodies show a large increase while those to district boards,
military department and Government officers, including jails, show a
slight decrease over the figures for the previous year. Supplies were sent
to the Health Officer, Station Municipality, Civil and Military Station,
Bangalore, and also to the Federated Malay States.

It was pointed out in the last annual report that the percentage of
lymph unaccounted for in the returns received by the Institute was 29.8.
The percentage of lymph unaccounted for this year is 21.9 showing
a further decrease of 7.9—vide statement No. 2. Only four districts show
a shortage of over 30 per cent: South Arcot (84.4), Rāmnād (55.4), Kurnool
(35.2) and Cuddapah (33.5). In the case of South Arcot the figure has
risen from 49.7 to 84.4, and Rāmnād from 44.8 to 55.4. Although there
has been a considerable general improvement over the figures for the
last year, the amount of Iymph unaccounted for is still very high, and it
would be well to invite the attention of the Director of Public Health to
the state of affairs in the districts of South Arcot and Rāmnād.

The number of returns made by the jails, military and other miscel-
laneous bodies is almost negligible compared with the large amounts of
lymph issued to them.

The total number of doses of bacterial vaccines issued from the
Bacteriological section during the year was 105,497. The number of
specimens examined by this section was 12,089. This does not include the
number of examinations carried out by the various investigation units
which amounted to 4,577. The number of specimens examined in the
Public Health section was 1,527. The work of these sections will be
found reviewed in greater detail later.

The investigation units attached to the Institute were sent to the
following places during the year under report:—

      (1) Ootacamund for relapsing fever.

      (2) Sappal Hill for malarial survey.

      (3) Kayalpatnam for kala-azar.

      (4) Mount Stuart and Top Slip for malarial survey.

      (5) Tinnevelly and Rāmnād districts for kala-azar enquiry and
entomological survey.

      (6) Ennore for malarial survey.

This work has been reviewed in the body of the report.

The report by the Public Analyst on the fixing of standards for milk
and milk products is being forwarded to Government separately.
