REPORT OF THE KING INSTITUTE, GUINDY

   * Tiruvannamalai.—The well at this station yielded a heavily polluted water
as in previous years, and no attempt at systematic chlorination has been made in
spite of repeated advice. Tiruvannamalai is a very important pilgrim centre
and the provision of a safer supply is therefore of very great importance.

Mayavaram, Nidamangalam and Tiruvarur.—The untreated supply now being
made is of poor quality. Systematic chlorination is recommended.

Tinnevelly junction.—Chlorination as practised was found to be defective, and
more accurate control of the process based on field tests was recommended.

Bengal-Nagpur Railway.

   * Chicacole road.—Chlorination continues to be defective.

(d) TYPES OF FILTERS.

Slow sand filters at Berhampur, Cocanada, Ellore and Vizagapatam were
found to function well during the current year. At Berhampur in May, and at
Cocanada in July, deterioration occurred in distribution so that the full benefit
of filtration did not reach the consumers. The slow sand filters at Periyakulam
functioned at best as mere strainers and clogged very rapidly; a similar state of
affairs was recorded in the last two annual reports.

The mechanical filter installations functioned well during the year. The
installation at the Cauvery-Mettur project continued to yield uniformly excellent
results. The Jewel filters at Erode gave variable results but produced a potable water.

There was nothing special to note in the behaviour of the infiltration galleries
during the year under report. There has been a general decrease in the yield
from many of the gallery supplies in the Presidency, necessitating the tapping
of augmentation sources such as trenches and wells.

   (3) Other work.—Details are given in Table XII under the following three
heads:—

      (a) Bacteriological. —As recorded.

      (b) Chemical.—Work relating to the prevention of Food Adulteration Act
is not included here as it will be reported upon separately by the Public Analyst.
One hundred and thirty samples were examined chemically for various purposes
as detailed in the Table.

      (c) Miscellaneous.—This was mainly the identification of snakes and
insects.

ASSISTANCE TO OTHER DEPARTMENTS.

Veterinary sera.—The work of receiving, cold storing and distributing
Veterinary sera continues.

Special examination of water-supplies.—One hundred and seventy-one samples
of water were examined for other departments and public bodies. A great deal of
work was done for the Water and Sewage Purification Committee. 7,485 samples
from the experimental filters at Kilpauk and 300 from the experimental filters
at Guindy were examined.

Vaccine lymph.—Regular supplies were made to Secunderabad Cantonment
and the Station Municipality, Bangalore. Supplies were also made to parts of
Mysore State.

INVESTIGATIONS OUTSIDE THE INSTITUTE.

   (1) In November 1930 Dr. G. V. Satyanarayanamurti tried the effect of
cholera bacteriophage in the field in Bellary district.

   (2) In December 1930 Dr. J. H. Theodore went to Cuddapah with the
same object as in (1) above.
