     Public Analyst.—Post held in abeyance.

     Assistant Chemists.—Mr. G. C. Moitra, B.Sc., F.C.S., and
Mr. A. K. Sen-Gupta, M.Sc., from 1st November to 31st December
1938.

     Assistant Malariologist.—Mr. R. K. Singh, M.B., B.S.

     Assistant Bacteriologists—Sub-Assistant Surgeon U Pa How, and
Sub-Assistant Surgeon U Kaung Mra Thoo.

     DEATH OF THE FOUNDER.—News of the demise of Sir Spencer
Harcourt Butler, G.C.I. E., K.C.S.I., I.C.S., was received with great
regret by all the members of the stiff. The melancholy event took
place on the 3rd March 1938. He took a great interest in the Institute
not only during his stay in Burma, but also after his retirement. As
late as November 1935, he sent a portrait of himself as a token of his
continued interest in this Institute. His last letter conveying his good
wishes was received in January 1937. He laid the foundation stone of
this Institute on the 21st November 1924, and formally opened it on
the 14th January 1926.

     VISITORS.—The following distinguished persons visited the Institute
during the year:—

     Major-General E. W. C. Bradfield, C.I.E., O.B.E., K.H.S., I.M.S.,
Director-General of Indian Medical Services.

     Professor S. Lyle Cummins, C.B., C.M.G., M.D., Director of
Research for the King Edward Welsh National Memorial Association
for Tuberculosis.

     ACTIVITIES OF THE INSTITUTE.—The activities of this Institute
can be divided under the following four headings:—

       (1) Teaching, (2) Routine Public Health Laboratory Work,
(3) Investigation and Research, and (4) Public Health Propaganda.
