REPORT ON THE WORKING OF THE HARCOURT BUTLER

   FREE SUPPLY OF CHOLERA VACCINE TO CHINA.—A free supply of
50,000 doses of cholera vaccine manufactured at this Institute was
made to the League of Nations Eastern Bureau, Singapore, in
connection with the appeal to the League by the National Health
Administration of China.

   LABORATORY ROUTINE.—Bacleriological Laboratory.—

(i) Pieparation of Cholera Vaccine.—

   The Professor of Bacteriology of the Calcutta School of Tropical
Medicine was supplied during the year, with a quantity of cholera
vaccine manufactured in this laboratory for the purpose of a compa-
rative test. The result of this test appeared in the Indian Medical
Gazelte of August 1938. This vaccine was found to produce a very
satisfactory antigenic response and protected laboratory animals against
lethal dose of V. choleræ.

(x) Maintenance of stock cultures.—Two strains of Pr. pestis were
added to the stock of cultures maintained in this
laboratory.
 
(xi) Fifty animal experiments were carried out during the year.  
(xii) Over 1,000,000 c.cs. of media of various description were
prepared during the year under report.
