GOVERNMENT OF MADRAS.

EDUCATIONAL DEPARTMENT.

     READ—the following paper:—

From H. B. GRIGG, Esq., M. A., Director of Public Instruction, to the Chief Secretary
to Government, dated Madras, 20th August 1885, No. 5609.

ORDER—dated 30th September 1885, No. 600, Educational.

The report read above has been fully reviewed by the Director of Public
Instruction.

     2. The work of the year was generally satisfactory, and, as remarked by the
Director, the progress made by the lady students must be most gratifying to the
friends of the medical education of women.

     3. It is satisfactory that the fiftieth year of the life of the college found it
stronger in numbers than in any previous year, very successful in University
examinations and possessed of individual students of considerable merit.

     4. The receipts from fees (Rs. 14,905) were higher than in any previous year
since the introduction of the system—a hopeful sign. The charges (Rs. 67,359)
were but slightly higher than those of the previous year (Rs. 67,191).

     5. With regard to paragraphs 20 and 22 of the Principal's report, the
Government also hopes that the college will one day become self-supporting and
endowed with scholarships founded by benevolent natives of the country for the
encouragement of medical research.

Chief Secretary.
