PRINCE OF WALES MEDICAL COLLEGE, PATNA
FOR THE
YEAR 1926-27.
Introductory.—The College entered on its second year of existence in
July 1926, and session closed in March 1927, with the transfer of 76 students
from the Calcutta Medical College to this institution, all departments of the
College began to function for the first time and the routine for class work and
hospital attendance was settled by the Principal in consultation. with the
departmental heads, who finally discussed and approved it in a College Council
meeting specially held. for the purpose.
Buildings and accommodation.—Some additions were made to the College
main buildings during the year, viz. (a) minor improvements in the department
of Anatomy including addition of the new basins and taps and shifting
of old ones to suitable positions, (b) replacement of northern windows of the
Biology department by large plates of glass and also provision of three roof
skylights in it, and (c) provision of steel fencing along the north side of the
College building. The accommodation in the Biology department was increased
from 30 to 40 seats.
The quarters for Professor of Pathology were completed during the year.
New quarters for Professor of Pharmacology are sanctioned. The Professor
of Physiology has been given the quarters of the Professor of Surgery, the
latter being without quarters till the new quarters for the Professor of
Pharmacology are ready when he occupies the last named officer's quarters.
Hostel.—As there is accommodation for only 96 students in the hostel an
extra bed has had to be added to each of the double rooms for the new-comers
from Calcutta.
Changes in the teaching staff.—Dr. E. W. H. Cruickshank, D.SC. (Lond.),
M.D. (Aberd.)., M.R.C.P. (Lond.), joined the staff on 4th July 1926
as Professor of Physiology.
Captain S. N. Hayes, F.R.C.S. (Eng.), I.M.S., transferred was succeeded
by Major R. R. M. Porter, M.C., M.A., M.B., F.R.C.S (Edin.), I.M.S., as
Professor of Surgery on 7th February 1927.
Lieutenant Colonel H. R. Dutton, I.M.S., left for England on three
months' leave combined with the annual vacation on 9th April 1927, Major
Porter officiating for him during his absence.
Admission of students and examinations, 1st M. B. B. S.—Forty students
(viz. Hindu twenty, Muhammadan nine, Oriya three, Domiciled Bengalis
seven, sons of Government servants one) were admitted, during the year to the
1st year class of whom two left very early for private reasons. Of the 38
who sat for the annual 1st M. B. B. S. 28 passed. Six out or the ten failures
passed the supplementary examination. The standard of the examination and
the courses of studies for the 1st M. B. B. S. being fairly high, the good result
reflects credit on the careful teaching given by the Biology staff as well as the
improved laboratory arrangement of the department. According to the rules
and regulations of the Patna University the 2nd M. B. B. S. Examinations
were held in October 1926 and March 1927.
