11. The Prince of Wales Medical College Students’ Association.—
Hitherto, the various activities of the students were run independently of
each other and there was no co-ordination. The finances of each section
were far from being satisfactory.
The Prince of Wales Medical College Students’ Association was started
in the beginning of the academic session 1934-35 for the purpose of co-
ordinating and controlling the athletic, social and literary activities of the
students.
Central Committee of the Students’ Association.—The co-ordination of
all the students’ activities has been made possible through the controlling
influence of an elected central committee of students presided over by the
Principal and assisted by a Vice-President from among members of the
teaching staff.
The central organisation has been able to effect considerable economies
in various spheres and to increase the efficiency of the various sections. It
has also succeeded in infusing a sense of unity in the activities of the
students, which was unknown before.
The fund of the Association is derived from an annual contribution by
the Government of Rs. 1,300 and from the annual contribution of Rs. 7 made
by each student on the College roll.
During the year under review the following sections of the Association
have been working, each under the guidance of an elected committee of
students presided over by a member of the College teaching staff:—
(1) Athletic Club.
(2) Dramatic Club.
(3) Magazine Section.
(4) Physiological Society.
(5) Clinical Society.
(6) Students’ Common Room.
(1) Athletic Club.—The students have shown keenness in practically all
sports including football, hockey, cricket, tennis, volley-ball, badminton,
boating and gymnastics.
Apart from practice games, they have played a number of matches
against local and outside teams with creditable results. They also joined a
number of tournaments and gained distinction by winning (1) The Pal Cup
for cricket, (2) The Alexander Cup for Tennis, (3) The Khan Cup for Volley-
ball and by being one of (4) the Finalists in the ‘ Institute Cup ’ for
football.
Seven members of the Medical College Athletic Club have at different
times played for the Patna University in the latter’s sporting engagements
in football, hockey and cricket.
(2) Dramatic Club.—The members staged three performances in Hindi,
Bengali and Oriya on the 1st December 1934 in the College Hall. These
shows were well patronized by the staff, the students and their friends.
The Club extended its activities by successfully arranging short variety
performances on the occasion of Saraswati Puja and on the occasion of their
annual social gathering.
