Causes of deaths.

The causes of death in the 31 fatal cases were as follows:—

Hospitalism.

      It will be observed that the hospital has still remained free from cases of osteo-
myelitis. If we attribute the cases of pyæmia and of gangrene, eight in all, to preventible
hospital influences, we shall have eight deaths thus caused out of 199, against 4 out of
178, 13 out of 175, 10 out of 188, 13 out of 181, and 16 out of 161, in the four preceding
years.

Lying-in Patients—Women, and Children up to the age of 7.

      The number of patients treated in Dr. Charles' wards was 745, against 747 in 1870, 662
in 1869, and 774 in 1868.

      There were 60 deaths, or 80.53 per thousand, against 74.96 in 1870 and 84.59 in 1869.

      The number of confinements was 146, against 139 in 1870 and 142 in 1869.

Ophthalmic In-patients.

Eye Infirmary.

      Dr. Macnamara's return, which is herewith appended, shows that 507 cases were
treated, against 527 in 1870 and 494 in 1869. The number of cases "cured" or "relieved"
was 401.

Medical and Surgical Out-door Dispensaries.

Dispensaries.

      Here 26,254 persons were treated. Of these, 17,797 were medical and 7,694 surgical
cases, and relief was given in the admission room to 763 individuals.

      In the three preceding years the numbers were 23,082, 22,557, and 20,477.

Minor operations.

      The Resident Surgeon performed 1,348 minor operations, against 1,964 in 1870, 2,216
in 1869, and 1,311 in 1868.
