REPORT OF THE
Comparison of
1870 and 1871.
It will no doubt be considered satisfactory that with a larger number of women the
admissions have fallen from 4,474 in 1870 to 2,037 in 1871. The practice in respect of
vaginal discharges accounts for much of the difference, but real and great improvement is
shown in the reduction of the more serious affections. A. comparative statement will make
this evident:—
1870. | 1871. | |
Hard chancre | 437 | 138 |
Indurated bubo | 53 | 12 |
Soft chancre | 937 | 662 |
Suppurating bubo | 94 | 28 |
Phagedænic sore | 30 | 8 |
Sloughing sore | 35 | 5 |
Secondary syphilis | 187 | 71 |
3.There is nothing of special interest in the practice of the Lock hospitals to call for
remark. The cases are ordinary ones, and the treatment employed that which is now most
common I believe in practice of the kind. Mercury is never used for primary syphilis, and
only for some of the more obstinate secondary affections.
4. The third table is a return of sickness from other causes occurring during detention
for venereal diseases.
it calls for no special comment.
