REPORT ON THE

MEDICAL COLLEGE HOSPITAL.

THE following is a summary of the very comprehensive and interesting annual report
submitted by Dr. Chevers on the working of the Medical College Hospital during the year
1875.

Principal statistics
of the year.

   1. The accompanying table exhibits in a very simple form most of the principal statis-
tical events of the hospital during the past year, and it will assist in illustrating various
portions of the report, which, in the absence of other and more elaborate figured statements,
would be rather confusing:—

Total treated.

Total in-door sick 4,456
" out-door ,, 45,374
Daily average sick in-door 309.02
" " out-door 415.61

2. The total number of in-door patients treated, exclusive of the inmates of the Eye
Infirmary, was 3,915, and this number is in excess of the
total treated in 1874 by 156.

Total deaths.

    3. There was 598 deaths, or at the rate of 152.74
per mille of total treated, and this mortality was higher than
that of any of the five preceding years. An explanation for this increased mortality is offered
in paragraph 6.

Moribund cases
influenced the
death-rate.

4. Of the 598 deaths, 109 took place within 24 hours after admission. Excluding
these moribund cases, the mortality was at the rate of 128.48 per mille of total treated, and
this is higher than the rate of the two preceding years, in which also the moribund cases
were deducted.
