MAJOR AND MINOR OPERATIONS.

Ophthalmic Hospital.

          In the Ophthalmic Hospital 21 cases were under treatment at the
end of the year 1876. During the year under report 216 operations were
performed, giving a total of 237. Of these, 158 were cured, 26 relieved,
37 unrelieved, and 16 remained under treatment.

Dispensary for Women and Children.

          The number of women and children who came for treatment was 14,309,
against 13,703, 15,463, 15,217, 13,766, and 11,892 in the five preceding
years.

          The minor operations performed were 440, against 440, 361, 390, 421,
512, and 229 in the six preceding years.

Ophthalmic Dispensary.

          In the Ophthalmic Dispensary there were 3,483 males, 1,052 females,
and 929 children treated, or a total number of 5,464 new patients.

Ophthalmic
Dispensary.

          The daily average attendance at this dispensary was 78.72 persons.

          The following table shows the relief rendered by this dispensary during

Obstetric Ward for Women and for Children up to the age of seven years.

          The number of patients treated by the Obstetric Physician was 1,109,
against 1,053, 993, 1,004, 943, 1,063, and 745 in the preceding six years.

          The deaths were 76 or 68.53 per 1,000, against 88.88, 64.55, 71.71, 73.17,
65.8, and 80.53 in the six preceding years.

          There were 260 women delivered in hospital during the year, against
250, 226, 216, 191, and 146 in the six years preceding. This shows a marked
and steadily progressive increase on the numbers of previous years.

          Of the women confined, 25 were Europeans, 91 Indo-Europeans, and 144
natives.

          There were 232 children treated in these wards, of these 34 died.

Ophthalmic In-patients.

          In the Ophthalmic Hospital, 536 in-patients were treated, against 534,
541, 590, 545, 535, and 507 in six preceding years.

Ophthalmic
In-patients.

          The number of cases cured was 270, relieved 147, making a total of 417,
who were materially benefited by treatment.

DISPENSARY PRACTICE.

Medical and Surgical Out-Door Dispensaries.

          There were 22,144 out-door patients (new cases) treated during the year.
Of these, 11,732 were medical and 10,412 were surgical cases. These figures
