diseases of the lungs alone were fewer, but the mortality was greatly in
excess of that in 1898, the death-rate having been 36.39 per cent., against 26.64
in the previous year. At the Chandney Hospital, 7 out of the 9 cases
died, or 77.77 per cent. This was due to the admission of a larger number of
cases of pneumonia in the last stage of the disease. Among Europeans and
Eurasians the death-rate varied from 7.14 per cent. in the Howrah General
Hospital and 11.35 in the Eden Hospital to 18.05 per cent. in the Medical
College Hospital Proper, reaching the highest rate (45.16 per cent.) at the Presi-
dency General Hospital. The solitary case at the Sambhu Nath Pandit
Hospital died, giving a death-rate of 100 per cent. Among "all others," the
death-rate at the Campbell Hospital was 63.29 per cent., against 55.41 in 1898,
but it is explained by the class of cases generally admitted into it.
32. Leprosy.—Fewer cases of leprosy were treated in hospital, viz., 24,
against 62 in 1898. Twenty-two were treated in the Campbell Hospital, against
52 in the previous year. The Superintendent says that patients who were
brought to the hospital for admission were sent to the Leper Asylum. One
European was admitted in the Presidency General Hospital and one constable
in the Police Hospital.
The Albert Victor Leper Asylum is overcrowded, but new buildings are
to be erected in a more suitable locality on a scale which will adequately
provide for these unfortunate persons.
33. Rheumatic affections—Furnished 723 cases, against 667 in 1898. The
increase was due to climatic influences, and chiefly occurred in the Campbell
Hospital, where 333 cases were admitted, against 240 in the previous year.
There were 11 deaths in all, or 1.52 per cent., against .29 per cent. in 1898.
Ten of the 11 deaths occurred in the Campbell Hospital, or 3 per cent.
Among the police there were 95 cases, against 99 in 1898.
34. Plague.—The following table shows the plague cases treated in
hospitals during the year under report:—

There was one case among children below five years of age in the Medical
College Hospital, and one of above 60 years of age in the Campbell Hospital.
The majority of sufferers was between the age of 11 and 40. Of the two
Europeans at the Presidency General Hospital one died and one recovered. The
solitary case at the Sambhu Nath Pandit Hospital was a Hindu, who was
gasping when he was brought to it. These cases were all included under
the heading "all other general diseases" in the statement, which swelled
the death-rate under that heading from 18.84 per cent. in 1898 to 23.33
in the year under report.
35. The figures which appear under the remaining heads of disease
in the foregoing statement do not call for special remarks.
