*As given by the Commissioner of Pegu.
The numbers on the register at some of the hospitals are so small that there cannot
be a doubt that registration is by no means perfect, and that there must be many women
unlicensed at every station.
The protected area remains the same, except at Thayetmyo, where it has been increased
to no less than 196 square miles. The working of the Acts over so large an extent of ground
must be merely nominal.
VII.-Whether registration fees have been levied, and at what rate.
Registration fees are only exacted at Rangoon and Thayetmyo, at 1 Re. each woman
per mensem. This fee should be exacted at all stations. In addition, a small sum has
been realised by fines.
The amount realised was as follows:-
Fees. | Fines. | Total. | |||||
Rangoon | .. | .. | Rs.3,645 | Rs.824 | .. | Rs.4,469
Thayetmyo | .. | .. | " 219 | .. | " 205 | .. | " 424 |
Moulmein | .. | .. | .. | " 130 | .. | " 130
Total Rs.5,023. |
The remarks of the Medical Officer of the Rangoon Lock Hospital, in his report, are
unintelligible, and his figures erroneóus. He says the total expenditure was Rs. 14,958-10-2,
while the cost to the State was Rs. 16,811-10-2. All this officer's figures require to be
received with the closest scrutiny.
VIII.—Whether the women have been regular at the periodical examinations.
The following table will chew the average number on the register, and their attendance
at the periodical examinations:-
