The proportion of sickness to average strength contrasts unfavourably with
last year. The increase is chiefly observable in the cases of primary syphilis,
there being 79 cases out of an average strength of 823.8, while last year there
were only 49 with a strength of 707. Out of these 79 cases, 12 were contracted
elsewhere, so that only 67 were actually contracted in Rangoon. Although the
results obtained are not quite so good as those of last year, they are very favourable
when compared with other stations, such as Madras. Excepting in these cases of
primary syphilis, the good results of last year have been maintained.

IV.—whether a Cantonment Sub-Committee has existed throughout the year.

There is no Cantonment Sub-Committee for exercising supervision over the
rules. The Town Magistrate is responsible for the working of the rules, while the
Medical Officer is in charge of the hospital.

V.—What special measures have been taken for control of prostitution, and for preventing unlicensed prosti-
tution.

The measures authorized by the Act have been adopted for the repression of
clandestine prostitution. During the year 16 women were arrested for practising
unlicensed prostitution, and all of them were convicted and brought on the register.
