per cent. of the European troops were affected with primary syphilis during the
year. This is the only venereal disease which, as a rule, ever renders a man
inefficient as a soldier and useless to the State. Out of a total strength of 800
Native Infantry, not a single man was admitted for any venereal disease.

  IV.—Whether a Cantonment Sub-Committee for exercising special supervision over the rules has existed during
the year, and what officers comprise it.

  There was no Cantonment Sub-Committee specially appointed during the
year to superintend the administration of the Contagious Diseases Act.

  The Cantonment Magistrate, aided by the Police Superintendent, was energetic
in giving effect to the provisions of the Act. The Civil Surgeon and he practically
act as the Sub-Committee.

  The Medical Officers of the European corps furnished weekly venereal reports,
and always seemed most anxious to give every information calculated to diminish
the spread of venereal complaints.   

  V.—What special measure has been taken for the control of prostitution, especially for preventing the dangers
 arising from unlicensed prostitution.

  All cases which occurred of women practising, or suspected of practising
illicit prostitution were enquired into either by the Cantonment Magistrate or the
Superintendent of Police. One policeman was appointed to look after the women.

  VI.—How far the registration has been efficient, to what it extends, and over what area; any increase or decrease
as compared with previous year.

  Act XXII. of 1864 is in force here. Its benefits extend to a distance of four
miles on all sides.

VII.—What registration fees or payments of any kind are levied on prostitution in Toungoo.

No fees or payments of any kind were levied from prostitutes during the year.

VIII.—Whether the women have been regular at the periodical examinations; any remarks as to the cause for
irregularity; the number of individual women reported for non-attendance; the fines and other punishments
awarded; the amounts realized.

  The women were very regular in their attendance. No one was reported for
being absent from a health inspection if able to give any reasonable excuse, such
as suffering from fever, being obliged to attend court, &c.

  The Native Doctor, accompanied by a policeman, always visited at the house of
any woman said to be sick, and subsequently reported regarding her to the Super-
intendent.

IX.—The arrangements for examining and treating the women of the town.

  The women were inspected once a week at the lock-hospital, and all cases,
even suspected of syphilis, immediately admitted.
