REVIEW

ON THE

REPORTS ON LOCK-HOSPITALS

IN

BRITISH BURMA

FOR THE YEAR 1880.

From J. M. JOSEPH, Esq., M.D., Deputy Surgeon-General, British Burma Division, to the Officiating
Secretary to the Chief Commissioner, British Burma,—No. 243C., dated the 6th April 1881.

I HAVE the honour to submit a review on the individual reports on lock-
hospitals in British Burma for the year .1880.

There are at present six lock-hospitals in British Burma, viz., at Rangoon,
Thayet-myo, Toungoo, Akyab, Bassein, and Moulmein.

The hospital at Prome was closed on the 31st August 1880 by order of Gov-
ernment. The hospitals at Rangoon, Thayet-myo, and Toungoo are worked under
the Cantonment Rules, and the remaining ones at Akyab, Bassein, and Moulmein
under Act XIV of 1868.

I.—The nature and extent of the hospital accommodation, whether it is suitable, and whether there has
been any change in it during the year.

No changes have been made in the Rangoon Hospital in regard to accommo-
dation, which is not sufficient; it is intended only for 71 patients, whereas
the daily average sick for the past year has been 102.59; consequently there has
been some overcrowding. The basement floor beneath the hospital has been
asphalted, which is a great improvement, as it was formerly in a very filthy con-
dition. The patients are now able to stay on the basement floor during the day,
instead of being in the wards.

Drains are about to be constructed, and, when these are completed, the sani-
tary condition of the hospital compound will be very greatly improved.

The accommodation of the remaining five hospitals has been sufficient to meet
the requirements of the sick. No additions or alterations have been made in
them. The Akyab Hospital is a very old building, and requires repairing.

The new hospital at Moulmein, which was sanctioned last year, has not been
constructed. The old hospital has however been kept in repair, and answers the
purpose fairly well.

II.—Any changes in the medical charge of the lock-hospitals during the year.

The following changes have taken place in the medical charge of the under-
mentioned lock-hospitals:-

Rangoon.—Surgeon G. A. Dundas was in charge of the hospital from the
1st January to the 25th April, and Surgeon-Major H. Johnstone, M.D., has been in
charge from the 26th April 1880.

Thayet-myo.—Surgeon O. Baker was in charge of the hospital from the
1st January to the 26th April, Assistant Surgeon .Odentoolah from the 27th April
to the 26th May, and Assistant Surgeon Chowdry has been in charge from the
27th May 1880.

Bassein.—First Class Assistant Apothecary R. S. Dawson was in charge from
the 1st January to the 7th May, and Surgeon O. Baker from the 8th May 1880.

Prome.—Surgeon S. H. Dantra was in charge from the 1st January to the
21st April, Second Class Hospital Assistant Mahomed Abdool Kurreem was in
