      From the above tables it will be found that the total admissions from vene-
real diseases during the year were 153 ; but if 41 cases, which were contracted
elsewhere, be deducted, it only leaves 112 cases actually contracted in Rangoon,
against 132 actually contracted in Rangoon according to the Report of 1879 :
this contrasts favourably with last year. The number of cases of primary
syphilis actually contracted in Rangoon in 1879 was 67, whereas during the year
under review it was 59. The following table contrasts the ratio per mille of
strength :—

Thus, with the exception of the year 1878, it contrasts favourably. The year
1878 can scarcely be taken as a fair criterion, as a portion of that year the troops
were not permitted to go to town, and thus incurred less risks.
