       10. Disease among women.—The amount of disease among the women has not
been at all in proportion to the amount of disease among the troops. Although in
the latter the number of admissions has been more than doubled as compared with
the previous year, in the former there has been an increase of only one in the class of
venereal affections.

The following is a comparative statement of admissions from all causes, including
non-venereal as well as venereal diseases:—

      1876. 1877.
Strength of both cantonment and city prostitutes   ... 153.00 148.27
Admissions from venereal diseases, ... ... 73 74
Ditto non-venereal ditto ... ... 93 57
      166 134

The average daily sick for the two years is as follows:—

      1876. 1877.
Average daily sick during the year ... ... 7.93 10.92

The diseases prevalent among the women have not been of a severe type, the
duration of treatment being on an average 29.73 days.

       11. Dhais.—One " dhai" is attached to the chakla in the sudder bazár. In
the regimental bazar a woman is entertained by private arrangement to look after the
women, while in other localities they are not subject to any such supervision.

       12. Suggestions.—I have nothing to add to what I have already said under
para. 5 regarding the establishment of lock-hospital police, and the stoppage of the
soldier's pay while in hospital from venereal disease.

       Agra, the 1st January, 1878.

A. SCOTT REID, M.B., SURGEON,
In medical charge of Lock-Hospital.
