Statement No. IV. attached to this report contains all venereal diseases, primary
and secondary, that have occurred among the European ,troops in garrison during
1877, whether, contracted at. Meerut or elsewhere.
It has been prepared in accordance with the form laid down (except the addition
of a few explanatory notes by me) by the sanitary commissioner with the Govern-
ment of India.
I exhibit on the following page a statement drawn up from the weekly returns of
the different hospitals, showing the localities where all the venereal cases are alleged
to have been contracted.
It will be seen from the statement that 126 cases of venereal diseases, 36 primary
syphilis and 78 gonorrhœa, were contracted at Meerut, of which the European infan-
try bazár is said to have contributed 50, the sudder bazár 16, the artillery bazár
27, the Hussars bazár 1, barrack plains 1, public roads 5, and unknown localities 14,
and there are 12 cases of secondary affections and relapses said to be due to primary
diseases contracted at Meerut, making the total primary cases 114, and secondary
12-grand total 126.
