   In these, as in the return for Military Lock Hospitals, there is seen a large
increase in the aggregate of admissions and in the proportion of cases of primary
syphilis during 1877.

   6. Admissions for Primary Syphilis amongst European Troops and Women
admitted to the Lock Hospitals.
—The following table contrasts the admissions from
primary syphilis among European troops with the corresponding admissions to
Lock Hospitals for a period of 5 years.

   In each year, with the exception of 1875, the admissions for primary syphilis
were more numerous amongst the women than amongst the troops, and in 1877 the
difference in this respect was well marked, There is no causative relation between
the figures.

   7. Ratio of admissions for Venereal Disease among European Troops.—It
will be observed that along with the great increase in the admissions to Lock
Hospitals, Military and Civil, there was a marked increase in the prevalence of
venereal diseases in the European force.

   In 1876 the rate per 1,000 was 179.27 whereas in 1877 it rose to 231.27, giving
an increase of 52.0 per mille. It will also be observed that the ratio for 1877 was
considerably higher than that of the remaining years for which figures are given in
the table.
