Dera Ghazi
Khan Horse
Show.

106. This show was held on 7th and 8th March 1895, and was an unqualified.
success, not only in the numbers that attended, but also in the numbers that
competed for prizes. The former showed an increase of 618 compared with
last year, and a very large increase as compared with all previous years.

The numbers, however, that competed for prizes were even greater as will
be seen from the following statement: —

411

1894 ... ... ... ...

637

The increase is mainly noticeable in the two most important classes. In
that for brood mares, 163 competed, showing an increase of 80 over last year,
and in the class for branded fillies, 306 competed or 79 more than last year.
This is most satisfactory, and points to Dera Ghazi Khan being one of our best
breeding centres.

The Deputy Commissioner states that the quality was so good and the in-
crease in number so large in these classes, that the Committee found it advisable
to increase the number of prizes and to add considerably to the amoun awatrded
for this class.

The gelding class is one that is specially mentioned. In it, 206 competed,
being 94 in excess of last year. This is most encouraging, and certainly this
district is a striking example to others where castration is so neglected.

The Deputy Commissioner brings to notice the Veterinary Assistant, Mir
Suleman Shah, stating that it was mainly due to his energy that this success
was obtained.

107. Fourteen head of young stock was obtained for the Kurnal Rearing
Depôt, whilst the following remounts were purchased for Native Cavalry :—

The Deputy Commissioner considers the number of remounts obtained
as small, and remarks as follows :—

"The reasons for the comparatively small number of remounts bought at the show are, in
my opinion, the same as those given last year, viz., that dealers had already carried off the pick of
the horses available. I think, however, that breeders are beginning to realise that it pays them
better to wait for the fair, and I expect an improvement in future."

I sincerely trust that this improvement will take place, but I fear that
the removal of young stock from the district by Bhujpuri dealers is the cause
for so few remounts being obtainable.

108. The Deputy Commissioner brings very forcibly to notice the fact that the
number of stallions supplied to this district is too small. I have already taken
steps to remedy the deficiency, and have ordered two Arabs, one Thoroughbred
English, and one small compact Hackney to be immediately sent.

Khan Horse
Show.

109. This show was held from 13th to 15th March 1895, and must be con-
sidered as having proved a great success.

The numbers attending were 1,292 against 965 last year, showing an in-
crease of 327, whilst 63 more competed for prizes.

This show is becoming of greater importance every year, as will be seen
by the following statistics. It has only been in existence for 4 years, and has
made gigantic strides :—

The Deputy Commissioner remarks :—

" There is no doubt that the fair is exceedingly popular in the district. The principle has
been consistently followed out, both by the Judging Committee and in the sports, of giving few
large prizes and as many small prizes as possible. This has, I think, given great satisfaction."
