128. Ferozepore is one of the best breeding districts of the South Punjab, and
it is doubtful if Jellalabad, situated in the Mamdot territory, is the best place
at which a District Show could be held; it is very difficult to reach and there-
fore purchasers are deterred from attending, still, as from the date on which
shows were first held in this district, Jellalabad has always been the place
selected, it would perhaps be unwise to change it, especially as the Managers
of the Estate have promised to make a good road direct from Ferozepore.

129. This show, although smaller, produced more remounts than last year.
The following were purchased :—

130. Two mules were bought by the Remount Agent. This is the first
occasion on which mules were available at this show. On this point, the Super-
intendent, Civil Veterinary Department, says :—

"It is to be regretted that although an officer of the Commissariat Department was on duty
at the fair, with a view of reporting on it, he had not been deputed to purchase mules for the
Department."

The various officers who purchased at this show report as follows :—

Captain Westlake, Remount Agent, says : —

"Above the average of most other fairs, although there is not the improvement anticipated
last year."

Major Steuart, 1st Punjab Cavalry, remarks :—

"The young stock require more liberty. The shackles which are almost universally worn do
a great deal of harm."

Captain Shaw, 2nd Punjab Cavalry, states:—

" Not as many as I expected to get as cavalry remounts. Young stock very good."

I quite agree with Major Steuart's remark about more liberty being re-
quired for the young stock; not only was this noticeable with the zemindar's
stock, but also with that of the Mamdot Estate. Arrangements, however, are
now being made to obviate this complaint with regard to the latter.

131. Having been present at this show, I took the opportunity of inspecting
the Mamdot Stud in company with Colonel Massey, Commissioner and Superin-
tendent, Jullunder Division, Mr. Francis, Deputy Commissioner, and Rai Baha-
dur Maya Das, the Manager of the Estate. It is very promising, although
it contained a few mares unfit for horse breeding; these it was decided to
weed out.

132. I regret to find that castration has not made the same progress in this
district that it has done in others. I noticed by far too much entire stock in
the show.

133. This show, held on 28th February and 1st March 1895, was, I regret
to say, even less successful than that held last year.

On comparing the statistics of the two shows held in 1893-94 and 1894-
95, we find that the latter shows a falling off of 189 in the total number that
attended the show and of 42 in the number that competed.

The Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Department, states :—

" Class I—Branded mares—was a very good one though numerically disappointing. Some
fine mares, showing good quality and fair bone, being brought up for competition. Class II—
Branded fillies—was decidedly the best, some of them showing fine quality. The remaining classes
were very small; in several cases only one being brought up for competition."

This is most discouraging, as I directed the Superintendent. Civil Veteri-
nary Department, to march carefully through the district, visiting every tehsil;
this he did, but I regret to see no better result.
