1043.    The number and descriptions of cattle censused were as follows:—

Bullocks about 6,000; Buffaloes 400; Cows 300; Calves 300. About 5000
were sold.

1044.    Sanitary arrangements were fair. No water was available close to the
Cattle Fair. The cattle had to resort to a few private wells about a mile away.
Supply of fodder was sufficient.

1045.    Two bullocks were attacked with Anthrax on the 20th May of which
one died and the other recovered. Healthy cattle were not allowed to approach the
Hospital pound. The bullocks were treated with garlic, ginger, ammonium chloride,
chunam and country arrak internally, and hot paste of ginger and assafœtida was
applied externally to the swollen parts.

1046.    Aluarthunnagari Cattle Fair, district Tinnevelly.—The Fair commenced
on the 11th June 1897 and lasted for 11 days. Alumbadi, Kangayam and local
cattle were exhibited in the Fair. They were brought from Madura and Tinnevelly
districts. The number and descriptions of cattle censused were as follows:—
222 cattle were brought to the Fair of which Alumbadi were about 100; Kangayam
500; and the rest consisted of local cattle, only about one-tenth of the cattle present
were sold. This small sale was due to the removal of cattle from the Fair too
early, consequent on an outbreak of cholera in the middle of the Fair ground.
Sanitary arrangements were satisfactory, and the supply of fodder sufficient.
There was no case af contagious cattle disease.

1047.    It is suggested that the arrangements made this year should be contin-
ued excepting the fencing, which was only a make-shift. The Fair ground being
on the banks as well as in the bed of the Tamterapurni river a movable fence
should be provided.

The number of cattle gathered this year was unusually small owing to the
prevalence of cholera in the town and its vicinity as well as on the fair ground.

1048.    Muttalapuram Cattle Fair, district Tinnevelly.—The Fair commenced
on the 12th July 1897, and terminated on the 26th July 1897, Mysore, Alumbadi,
Kagayam and local breed of cattle were represented at this Fair, and were brought
from the districts of Salem, Coimbatore, Madura and Tinnevelly.

No census was taken. There were about 16,000 cattle brought to the Fair, of
which Mysore were about 1,000; Alumbadi 6,000; Kangayam 5,000; and the
rest consisted of local cattle. About 80 per cent. of the cattle were sold. Sanitary
arrangements were satisfactory and the supply of fodder was sufficient.

There was no case of contagious cattle disease of a serious nature.
       The following suggestions were made.

In addition to other sanitary expenses 50 per cent. should be sanctioned
for the preparation of the Fair ground (including levelling the ground), where
necessary, marking lines for picketting of cattle, forming streets (and indicating
them with flags) for passage of men and carts, digging pits at convenient places
for depositing dung, and sweepings until its ultimate removal to fields. The Fair
came to a close a little earlier than usual owing to the fact that there were a few
imported cases of Cholera of which two ended fatally.

1049.     Tankarana Inarkoil Cattle Fair, district Tinnevelly.—This Fair com-
menced on the 9th August 1897, and terminated on the 20th August 1897. There
were about 4,500 cattle brought to the Fair of which there were about 1,000 Alum-
badi, 1,500 Kangayam and 2,000 local cattle; they came from the districts of Salem,
Coimbatore, Madura and Tinnevelly. Sanitary arrangements were fair, and the
supply of water was sufficient. There was no case of contagious cattle disease.
It was suggested by the Stock Inspector that the arrangements made this year
should be continued, but the cattle brokers' tax, newly introduced this year of
3 pies per rupee of the sale money realized, should be discontinued as it proved very
vexatious. If necessary, the tax on cattle brought to the Fair might be increased.

1050.    Jhimmarajpurram Cattle Fair, district Tinnevelly. This Fair com-
menced on the 24th September 1897 and lasted for 29 days. About 3,000 cattle
