were brought to the Fair from Madura and Tinnevelly districts of which about
800 were Alumbadi, 1,000 Kangayam, and the rest local bred. Sanitary arrange-
ments were fair and the supply of water was good and sufficient. No case of
contagious cattle disease was detected.

      The following suggestions were made by the Stock Inspector:—
      The Fair ground should be fenced with Korkapuli, or other suitable hedge
            plant.
      Trees should be grown on the sides of the present streets.
      No tax should be levied for a few years to come as the Fair is not yet
            developed.

1051.    Sulramaina Cattle Fair, District Sicunaru. This Fair commenced on
the 6th November and terminated on the 29th November 1897. About 26,000
head of cattle, consisting of bulls, bullocks, buffaloe bulls, buffaloe bullocks, she
buffaloes, cows and about eight small ponies were brought to the Show from parts
of Mysore and Coorg. These cattle were of the following breeds:—

          Mysori, (Bettathapur and mixed breeds).
          He buffaloes.—Shirsi breed, (in the Canara).
                   Do.           Hyderabad breed, (Nizam's dominions).
                   Do.           Krishnagiry breed, (Salem).
                   Do.           Mysore.
          She buffaloes.—Krishnagiry, Mysore, and Hyderabad.    About 15,000 head of cattle were
                         sold..

      Sanitary arrangements were good and the supply of fodder was sufficient.
      There was no case of contagious disease.

1052.     Tirunannamalai Cattle Fair, District South Arcot.—This fair com-
menced on the 3rd December and terminated on the 11th December 1897. The
Kolar, Alumbadi, and local breeds of cattle were collected at the Fair. They were
brought from the following districts:—Tirupattar, Krishnagiri, Dharampuri and
Salem taluks of Salem district, Kolar (Mysore Province) Vellore, Gudiyattam,
Arcot, Arniand Wallahjah taluks of North Arcot district, Chengam division of
Tiruvanalai, Triukkailar and Kalla Kurchi taluks of South Arcot district.

The number and description of the cattle are as follows:—Cattle 19,300;
Buffaloes 500; Ponies, 200, total 20,000 of these the number sold was:—Cattle
19,800; Buffaloes 500 ; Ponies, 200, total 19,800. Sanitary arrangements were
fair, and the supply of water was good and sufficient.

There were two cases of Foot and Mouth disease, both cured, and two
cases of Anthrax of which one died. There was a good demand for cattle this year.
They were sold for satisfactory prices to persons from Jaffna, Colombo (Colony
of Ceylon), Tuticorin, Tinnevelly, Madura, Puducotta State, and to ryots from
North Arcot, South Arcot, and Chinglepat districts.

1053.    Berikai Cattle Fair, District Salem.—The Fair commenced on the 3rd
January and terminated on the 11th January 1898. About 10,000 cattle attended
the Fair, they were of the small type of mixed Mysore breed, and were brought
from the following places:—Malur, Kolar, and Bangalore, in the Mysore Provinces.
Timpatin, Hosur, Berikai and Shorlagiri. About 5,000 were sold. Sanitary
arrangements were satisfactory, supply of water good and sufficient. There had
been no case of contagious cattle disease.

1054.    Mailamalong Cattle Fair, District South Arcot.—The Fair commenced
on the 29th January and terminated on the 2nd February 1898. There were
about 1,200 bullocks collected at the Fair of which about 900 cattle were sold.
The cattle assembled were of Alambadi, Kolar, and local breeds and were brought
from the districts of North Arcot, Salem, and South Arcot. Sanitary arrangements
were fair, and the supply of water was good and sufficient. There had been no
case of contagious cattle disease. It is suggested by the Stock Inspector that the
Cattle Disease Act may be enforced from the next Fair, and that a well be dug for
the supply of water.

Pairs of good local breed were sold from Rs. 50 to 70; good pairs of Kalor
cattle were disposed of from Rs. 100 to 120.
