                    PART II.—PROVINCIAL REPORT.

                    VI.—TOURS OF SUPERINTENDENTS.

1122.    Table P. will show the tours of the various Superintendents. This
table also gives the distances travelled by rail, road, &c., the districts visited and
the Shows attended.

1123.    The work done by Superintendents connected with horse and mule
breeding is as follows:—

Miles travelled by road.

Superintendent,

North-Western Provinces and Oudh...

2,510

North Punjab ... ... ...

2,144

South Punjab ... ... ...

2,012

Baluchistan ... ... ...

1,576

Bombay... ... ...

807

1124.    To develop horse and mule-breeding it is imperative that Officers of
this Department should travel as much as possible by road. This is necessary
in order that they should see as much of the young stock as possible in the
various districts, and this they cannot expect to do unless they march through
each tehsil. Rail is necessary in order to enable them to go to outlying parts
expeditiously, but this method of travelling is not to be advocated.

1125.    It is, therefore, pleasing to note that the Superintendents, Civil Veteri-
nary Department, North-Western Provinces and Oudh, and South Punjab, main-
tained their high averages of last year, and that the Superintendents, North
Punjab and Baluchistan, greatly exceeded theirs. When the work done by these
Officers is considered, Bombay compares very unfavorably.

1126.    The Superintendents, whose duties may be described (as far as their
various Provinces are concerned) as being connected with cattle, travelled the
following distances by road:—

Superintendent,

Central Provinces... ... ...

1,197

Bengal ... ... ...

954

Ajmere... ... ...

Nil.

Burma ... ... ...

2,314

1127.    No travelling was done in Ajmere-Merwara owing to the Principal,
Rajputana Veterinary School, having proceeded on furlough in November and
it being necessary that the Officiating Principal should devote the whole of his
time to the School.

1128.    The distance shown as having been traversed in Burma includes that
travelled by river.

1129.    Both the Superintendents, Bengal and Central Provinces, have done
excellent work.
