47. The very incomplete manner in which these statistics are rendered,
leads me to imagine that no proper method exists of recording the results, and
the accuracy of the number of mares covered is also open to doubt. Under
these circumstances it would be misleading to draw comparisons on the returns
of previous years, or to attempt an explanation as to the causes of any differ-
ence in figures.

                                         IV.-INSTRUCTION FARM.

United Provinces.

48 Tables XV and XVII show the working of the 2 Instruction Farms
attached to this Department. At the one in the United Provinces, there were
10 brood mares at the beginning of the year, 1 was purchased and 1 sold dur-
ing the year, leaving a balance of 10. One colt and 4 head of mule stock were
foaled during the year; these added to the 3 foals at the beginning of the
year, made a total of 8; of which, 1 died and 4 were sold, leaving a balance
of 3.

49. The Balance Sheet of cultivation operations, shows a small but satis-
factory saving or profit of Rs. 176-11-1.

Punjab

50.  At the commencement of the year there were 7 mares on the Farm;
of which, 1 was destroyed, 1 sold, and 5 transferred to the Hissar Cattle Farm.
There were 4 foals dropped during the year, of which 2 died, leaving a balance
of 2 on the books of the Farm.

51.  The results of cultivation operations are satisfactory, showing a profit
of Rs. 707-5-0.

52.  These Farms, however, no longer exist. The Army Remount Depart-
ment having intimated that it would not take over the Instruction Farms, the
animals were transferred to the Hissar Cattle Farm, and the establishment
discharged. But these changes were effected after 1st April 1903, and will
be alluded to in the next Annual Report.
