(Kazi Mohamed Aslam Khan, C.M.G.) is very desirous of fostering and developing
horse and mule breeding industries, and it may be hoped that under this officer the district
will show improvement.

The sum of Rs. 250 has been again sanctioned by the Government of India for Impe-
rial prizes, and local and district funds have subscribed Rs. 300 for prizes to be awarded
at the next show.

The Director of Land Records and Agriculture, Punjab (E. B. Francis, Esq., C.S.), in
forwarding the report on the Jhang Horse Show, states: "The Deputy Commissioner
recommends that Rs. 700 maybe granted as prizes at the next show. The landholders of the
Jhang District are unadvanced in their ideas on horse-breeding, and require much practical
instruction to enable them to appreciate the superiority of the Government sires over
their country-bred animals. I would therefore recommend a liberal allowance of prizes for
some years."

Kurnal Horse
Show.

This show commenced on the 1st and ended on the 4th February 1893.

The number of stock present was 442 against 936 at the show of 1892. The Deputy
Commissioner reports: "The decrease is due mainly to three causes—

     (1)   The intense frost which made owners afraid to expose their stock at night
             without shelter.
     (2)   The awful rainfall which set the people ploughing up land for the kharif.
     (3)  The small number of mares (27) that were branded at the last fair. This disap-
pointed the people terribly. This year 72 were branded, and the effect will
            doubtless be apparent next year."

The Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Department (Veterinary-Major G. J. R. Ray-
ment), notes: "A number of marriages were being celebrated in the district, and large
numbers of horses were reported to have been taken up for the processions."

One horse was purchased by the Army Remount Department and 5 for the 5th Ben-
gal Cavalry.

The Deputy Commissioner notes: "No prizes were awarded to these remounts, as the
animals were removed from the fair ground immediately the sale was completed and not
brought up before the Committee for examination. Nineteen horses and ponies were sold
at the fair to zemindars and others for a total sum of Rs. 3,533, the highest price paid being
Rs. 275 and the lowest Rs. 60.

"As heretofore, the District Board supplied, free of cost, fodder and wooden pegs for
animals for the number of days the fair lasted."

It is satisfactory to find that 72 mares and fillies were branded during the show.

Four bridles were given to the following successful competitors:—

                              Bode Ram of Dabkaoli.
                              Bhagwana of Kurnal.
                              Nasir Khan of Dararh.
                              Mangat of Bapaoli.

Lahore Horse
Show.

This exhibtion was held in Inayata Bagh on the 24th and 25th of March 1893.

The Deputy Commissioner (A. E. Hurry, Esq.), in his report on the show, remarks;
"The show has always been held in connection with the annual Charaghan Fair at
Shahlamar, which attracts a very large number of visitors from all parts of the province.
It was unfortunate for the success of the fair that it fell on a date in the Mahomedan
fast (Ramzan)."

The total number of animals present was 693 as against 675 in the preceding year, and
it is reported that "the fair continues to maintain its position among the fairs of the
province, and were it possible to prohibit the sale of young stock to dealers from outside,
much éclât would be added to the show. The dealers' class increased, being 318
compared with 202 in the previous year; but slight diminution occurred in the breeders'
class."

The Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Department (Mr. Drage), states: "Taking
into consideration the number of Government stallions in this district, I consider the
entries for the different classes were small; also the class of animals exhibited was
decidedly poor. This state of things can easily be accounted for, as I hear the large horse-
dealers in Lahore buy up the young stock in the district some time prior to the show. This
