Paras. 28-34.                                                      Treatment of Animals.

                 CHAPTER II.—THE TREATMENT OF ANIMALS.

SECTION 4.—GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING THE TREATMENT
                                        OF ANIMALS.

28.  Animals placed on the Sick List.—All animals which are not fit for
duty must be placed definitely on the sick list. The practice of keeping
animals under observation or on a separate convalescent list for an indefinite
period is forbidden.

29.  Rations for sick animals.—The responsible V. O. or veterinary
assistant surgeon, will decide the rations to be issued to animals under treat-
ment, either in a veterinary hospital or as out-patients. Rations for animals
under treatment in hospitals, class I, other than those located in remount
depôts which will be rationed by the depôt concerned, will be obtained from
the I. A. S. C., and from the unit to which the animal belongs in the case of
those under treatment in Class II hospitals.

When an officer's charger which is entitled to receive free forage is admit-
ted into a veterinary hospital, the officer to whom it belongs will arrange for
the feed of the horse while under treatment.

30.  Inspection.—All animals will be inspected by the O. C. hospital
on admission into, and on discharge from hospital.

31.  Record of Treatment.—A record of treatment for unusual or im-
portant cases will be maintained for hospital record purposes only, on I. A. F.
Z.-2058 by the O. C. hospital.

32.  Register of Sick and Lame Animals.—Veterinary hospitals will
maintain on I. A. F. V.-1758 a register of sick and lame animals for each unit
or detachment in the station and, in addition, a consolidated register on the
same form of sick and lame animals admitted into hospital.

In the case of stations at which a veterinary hospital does not exist, I. A. F.
V-1758 will be maintained by the V. O. or veterinary assistant surgeon in
charge.

33.  Annual Return of Sick and Lame Animals.—Annual returns of sick
and lame animals will be submitted in accordance with Appendix II.

When a unit moves in relief, the return will be compiled up to the date on
which the unit moves from its old station, and submitted to the D. A. D. V. S.
concerned; the return for the remaining portion of the year will be compiled
and submitted by the V. O. i-c. of the unit at its new station.

34.  Diagnosis.—(i) Diseases will be classified in accordance with Appen-
dix VII.

(ii) When submitting reports and returns, the letters " N. Y. D." (" not
yet diagnosed ") are to be entered against any case which cannot be diagnosed
definitely, and also against cases in which a more serious lesion, possibly
resulting in total disability or death, is likely to develop. The nature of the
case is to be stated in the column of remarks and a correct entry is to be
made as soon as the case has been diagnosed definitely ; adherence to the
correct nomenclature of diseases as given in Appendix VII is essential
to obviate the necessity for the constant alteration of statistics owing to
subsequent changes in diagnosis.

(iii) When it is necessary to alter a diagnosis, the original entry is to be
crossed out and the new diagnosis inserted in red ink.
