(iii) Instructions regarding the assistance to be rendered by personnel
of units in the performance of veterinary duties in hospitals and the respon.
sibility for the charge of hospitals in the absence of veterinary personnel
are contained in R. A. I.

(iv) The functions of military veterinary hospitals comprise the reception
and treatment of military animals including the authorized chargers of officers.

7.  Army Veterinary Schools.— Army veterinary schools are established
and maintained as required in accordance with the orders of the G. of I.
They are administered by A. H. Q. except for purposes of local administra-
tion and discipline.

Their functions include :—

      (a) Technical training of I. A. V. C. personnel.
      (b) Training of personnel of units of other services and arms in veteri-
                  nary first aid and animal hygiene.

The syllabus of instruction are contained in the pamphlet entitled
"Courses of Instruction, India."

The Army Veterinary School, Poona, is administered by a Managing
Committee consisting of the following :—

                                          President.

The Commander, Poona Independent Brigade Area.

                                          Members.

The D. D. V. S., Southern Command.

An officer to be nominated by the G. O. C.-in-Chief, Southern Com-
mand.

The Committee will regulate the expenditure of the school funds and
the Commandant of the school will submit to the Committee quarterly a
balance sheet of the accounts.

8.  I. A. V. C. Record Office.—The I. A. V. C. Record office deals with
the records of all personnel of the I. A. V. C. The duties of the O. i/c. I. A.
V. C. Records are defined in the Standing Orders for the Indian Army
Veterinary Corps. The I. A. V. C. Record office is administered directly by
A. H. Q.

9.  I. A. V. C. Depot.—The I. A. V. C. Depot is administered directly by
A. H. Q. and carries out the initial training of recruits for the I. A. V. C. and
the discharge or transfer to the reserve of combatant personnel of the I. A. V. C.

10.  Military Veterinary Laboratory.—The Military Veterinary
Laboratory is administered directly by A. H. Q. and in collaboration with
the Imperial Veterinary Research Institute, Mukteswar, deals with :—

      (a) Examination of morbid specimens from army animals.
      (b) The field and laboratory investigation of diseases and any special
                  investigation as may be ordered from time to time by A. H. Q.
      (c) The investigation in horse-breeding areas for which the Army Re-
                  mount Department is responsible, of strangles, contagious
                  abortion, sterility, surra and nutritional disease.
      (d) In conjunction with the Chemical Examiner, Punjab, the examina-
                  tion of specimens for poisons.
